Shane Mosley Talks Desire for Floyd Mayweather Rematch, Manny Pacquiao, More
Former three-division world champion Shane Mosley is set to return to the boxing ring Saturday night against Ricardo Mayorga, bringing an end to his second retirement. He's focused on getting himself back in contention for another high-profile clash with Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Manny Pacquiao.
Mosley, who's now 43, first retired in June 2012. After returning to defeat Pablo Cesar Cano, he walked away from the sport again late in 2013. In an interview with Jake Fischer of Sports Illustrated, he stated he's back to full strength and is hoping to land at least one more mega bout: "So I wanted to get in there and prove myself. I want to get a couple of fights and then I want to try for the world title again. I want to fight Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. I'm on that level. I'm still on that level. When I fought those guys the first time, I was injured."
He's confident those issues are now a thing of the past. He told SI he's been training with the likes of Shawn Porter and Brandon Rios, and the results of the sessions make him believe he can make another run toward the top of the sport:
"I've already proved it to myself. I want to prove to the world. Not only that, but Bernard Hopkins is fighting at 50 years old. Nowadays, people are staying healthy and I've been in the gym training. I already know I'm a bad man, I'm sharp, I'm fast, I'm gonna hit hard. I'm this sharp right now because I'm healed. Now I can move. It's different now.
"
Mosley must showcase himself in a major way before he gets another chance at either Mayweather and Pacquiao. His record is a lackluster 3-5-1 since a loss to Miguel Cotto, and the only notable win during that stretch came against Antonio Margarito.
The situation is even more muddled when talking about Mayweather. His camp has continued to insist his Sept. 12 clash with unheralded foe Andre Berto will mark the end of his career, though there's also speculation he's merely warming up for a more prominent matchup in 2016.
Regardless, if Mosley wants to come anywhere close to those conversations, he must look dominant in his return to the ring. There was no doubting his talent, at least during his prime, and if he can get back to that level now that he's healthy, he might get that one more chance at one of the sport's top names.
His most recent fights make it tough to believe that's going to happen, though.
