Justin Wilson, Late IndyCar Driver, Will Save 6 Lives Through Organ Donation
IndyCar driver Justin Wilson, who died Monday following complications from injuries sustained during an August 23 race, has saved six lives by donating his organs.
Wilson's brother Stefan tweeted the news Tuesday:
The 37-year-old Wilson was struck by a piece of debris following a single-car crash by fellow driver Sage Karam on the 180th lap at Pocono Raceway. He was airlifted to Lehigh Valley Health Network Cedar Crest Hospital, per IndyCar's official Twitter.
Hulman & Co., which is the parent company of IndyCar, CEO Mark Hulman said on Monday night that Wilson died as a result of the accident, per IndyCar.com:
"Justin's elite ability to drive a race car was matched by his unwavering kindness, character and humility -- which is what made him one of the most respected members of the paddock. As we know, the racing industry is one big family, and our efforts moving forward will be focused on rallying around Justin's family to ensure they get the support they need during this unbelievably difficult time
"
Wilson joined the IndyCar circuit in 2008, starting 120 races in seven years and winning three times. His most recent victory was at the Firestone 550 in 2012. The England native's best finish in 2015 was second at the Honda Indy 200 on August 2.
Wilson is survived by his wife, Julia, and their two daughters.
