Undertaker vs. Lesnar Finish Should Set Up Hell in a Cell Rematch

Brad JonesAug 24, 2015

On Sunday night at SummerSlam, we saw Undertaker beat Brock Lesnar—albeit via a murky, questionable finish. Now, the question is where the feud goes from here.

Giving Undertaker the official victory, but only after The Deadman taps out to the Kimura Lock, would be a method of extending this program rather than rounding it off. There's still an ongoing issue here, and it's one that's going to produce a match that fans are desperate to see.

However, it's difficult to see exactly how that rematch will come about—although it seems fairly obvious that a stipulation will be added to the eventual bout.

Sunday night's match threatened to spill out of the confines of a straight singles match several times, so the next instalment in this feud has to be No Holds Barred at the very least. With that said, the history between The Phenom and The Beast suggests we might see something a little grander.

Back at No Mercy in 2002, Undertaker challenged for Lesnar's world title inside Hell in a Cell. The match was brutal and did a great deal to cement the rookie champion's status at the top of the card.

Moreover, it was one of the best bouts to ever take place inside the structure. The pair tore each other to pieces—even Paul Heyman was wearing a crimson mask by the time all was said and done, and he was on the outside of the cage.

A Hell in a Cell match would be a great way to play off the storied history of this feud while upping the threat level in a program that has become very personal.

There aren't many rivalries that truly warrant this stipulation, but Lesnar vs. Undertaker certainly does.

However, that's not a match that would comfortably sit on the card for next month's Night of Champions. It's a bout that fans would no doubt be very eager to see, so perhaps it's one that's best left to simmer for a little while to build anticipation.

The live event from Madison Square Garden might be a good choice. It was announced on Sunday night that the October 3 show will be broadcast on the WWE Network and Lesnar will be on the card:

This would be a sure-fire way to book a standout special, but there are a couple of facts standing in its path. For one, it seems unwise for two Lesnar vs. Undertaker matches to take place in the same city with little time passing between them.

Furthermore, that doesn't seem to be the strategy WWE is using for these live broadcasts on its network. Rather than being on the level of a pay-per-view, there's a different tone to the events we've seen so far.

Look back at Beast in the East—Lesnar made an appearance there, but it was more as a warm-up for his WWE World Heavyweight Championship match against Seth Rollins two weeks later.

Booking Lesnar on these shows is a canny way of addressing one of the issues with his limited schedulethe fact that his opponents haven't been as varied as many would like. Seeing The Beast take on an unexpected challenger in Madison Square Garden would be reason enough for fans to tune in.

Like with Beast in the East, it would also give Lesnar the opportunity to pick up a convincing win ahead of a big match. Looking at WWE's schedule, there's a pay-per-view just three weeks after the Madison Square Garden show will air—the 2015 edition of Hell in a Cell.

Of course, this is all speculation at this point, but the stars certainly seem to be aligning for WWE to close out its biggest current feud in spectacular form. There's a clear roadmap to an electric Hell in a Cell main event, if the company chooses to take it.

However, there might be something quite different in the works.

Monday night's broadcast of Raw isn't guaranteed to confirm where this program is going—although we can expect a top-tier promo from Paul Heyman—but hopefully we'll get some sort of a clue as to what's next for The Beast and The Phenom.
