Wyndham Championship 2015: Leaderboard Scores and Highlights from Saturday

Joe PantornoAug 22, 2015

The third round of the Wyndham Championship took place Saturday afternoon with a very familiar face vying for the title.

Don't run to your calendars and check what year it is. Your eyes are not deceiving you.

Tiger Woods is entering a Sunday of a PGA event toward the top of the leaderboard, looking for his first victory on the tour since 2013. But he has plenty of company.

Here is the updated leaderboard after Saturday's play with a closer look at some of the day's most notable performers:

Sitting at 187th in the FedEx Cup rankings, Woods basically needs a first-place finish if he has any hope of making the playoffs. He has set himself up nicely to do so, shooting a two-under 68 on Saturday as he sits in a tie for second place.

Woods started his day right with a birdie on the first hole, as the PGA Tour's official Twitter account shows:

But after another birdie on No. 5, the rest of his day was rather uneventful. But for Woods, no news was good news, as he parred the next 10 holes.

Woods sprang to life on No. 16 with a birdie on the par three in which he drained a downhill effort to put him one back of the lead. The PGA Tour has the replay of Woods' birdie:

He ran into trouble on No. 17, as his second shot fell victim to the false front of the green and dropped downhill back onto the fairway.

He was able to chip his shot over the hill four feet past the hole, setting up a dangerous downhill chance. But vintage Tiger was on the prowl, as he sank his putt with the perfect touch. But a bogey on the 18th unraveled his day slightly, dropping him out of Sunday's final pairing, as he will work his last round alongside Scott Brown.

Woods is not the only low-ranked player on the FedEx Cup standings who is in contention for the title.

The field is chasing Jason Gore, who took the lead later in the day, as the man ranked 166th shot an eight-under 62 to go to 15 under overall.

Gore recorded nine birdies on the afternoon and finished his day strong with a birdie on 18 that gave him a two-stroke lead. The PGA Tour shows the replay of his final birdie of the day:

He'll be playing in Sunday's final round with Jonas Blixt, who is ranked 135th and was the day's early leader after also posting an eight-under 62. The Swede, like Gore, dropped nine birdies on the day, including four in a six-hole span starting on the back nine.

Blixt did well on his approach, hitting 85.19 percent of greens in regulation, setting up some very convertible putting opportunities.

Brown rounds out the tie for second place at 13 under overall after shooting a four-under on Saturday. Brown recovered nicely from a front nine that saw two birdies erased by a pair of bogeys by birdieing four of his final nine holes.

There are 11 golfers who sit within two strokes of the tie for second, as a crowded field is going to be on the hunt to dethrone Gore from the top spot.

One of the greatest golfers the game has ever seen looks to turn back the clock just a little while longer after a long hiatus away from the first-place podium, but Woods will need to make up two strokes in the process.

If he is able to navigate these fast greens as well as he did the first three rounds, Woods is going to give himself a good chance to win this tournament. He will need to put together another solid outing, shooting a four- or five-under if he wants a chance of winning, but he's been playing some of his best golf at this tournament, better than at any other point in the last few years. And during that time, one never counted out Woods.
