Manchester United 0-0 Newcastle United

After their comprehensive defeat to Swansea City in Week 2 and with key defender Daryl Janmaat suspended, the omens didn't look good for Newcastle at Old Trafford, but the Magpies came away with an encouraging and well-deserved point.

Wayne Rooney thought he'd ended his goal drought after just three minutes when he found the back of the net from Adnan Januzaj's incisive pass, but the Englishman's effort was ruled offside by the linesman.

The Telegraph's Liam highlighted Rooney's worrying run for the Red Devils:

United imposed themselves well in the early stages while Newcastle hung on for dear life, but the visitors grew into the game and almost found themselves ahead when summer signing Aleksandar Mitrovic rattled the crossbar with his header midway through the half.

As the Chronicle's Mark Douglas and Lee Ryder note, the young striker impressed on his first start for the club, while his side defied expectation with a magnificent defensive performance:

Javier Hernandez and Chris Smalling both had chances late on and would have scored if not for the excellent Tim Krul and the post respectively, but the result was fully deserved with United failing to convince yet again.

Despite failing to find away through their opponents, United boss Louis van Gaal was happy with the performance.

Per BBC Sport, he said: "We can be satisfied with the performance but not with the result—we were unlucky. We did not make the right choices in the final third but we played fantastic as a team. I like these kind of games when we work like this, but not this result."

The Red Devils are yet to concede this season, but after struggling to find rhythm and pace in attack in each of their three games, they will need work hard in the coming weeks with some difficult fixtures coming up, per Liam:

As for Newcastle, they welcome Arsenal to the north-east in their next match. If they can put in as strong and committed a performance at the back as they did on Saturday, the Magpies stand a good chance of earning another point.

West Ham United 3-4 Bournemouth

A hat-trick for Callum Wilson earned Bournemouth an historic first ever win in the English top flight in their magnificent match with West Ham.

The 23-year-old put the Cherries 1-0 up after 11 minutes, meeting Simon Francis' cross with a powerful strike, before doubling his tally after capitalising on some loose control from the surprisingly poor Aaron Cresswell inside the area.

Sports reporter Ian Abrahams summed up the game at half-time:

West Ham were level shortly after the restart, thanks to a Mark Noble penalty and Cheikhou Kouyate's second goal of the season.

The Hammers continued to make errors at the back though, this time Winston Reid at fault and Bournemouth's Marc Pugh providing a cool finish.

Things went from bad to worse for West Ham when Carl Jenkinson saw red, hauling back the impressive Max Gradel and conceding a penalty in the process, which Wilson duly tucked away.

The Guardian's Jacob Steinberg pulled no punches in his assessment of Slaven Bilic's side:

Modibo Maiga ensured a tense end to the dramatic match when he grabbed a third for the Hammers with eight minutes of normal time remaining, but Eddie Howe's Bournemouth valiantly held on for a deserved win.

ESPN Stats and Info highlighted how far the Cherries have come in a short space of time:

Bournemouth host the in-form Leicester City in their next outing, but after their outstanding display on Saturday, they have no reason to fear even the Foxes.

As for West Ham, their form has dipped dramatically after their opening day win over Arsenal, while Jenkinson's red was their ninth of the season in all competitions.

A trip to Liverpool in Week 4 is unlikely to see them turnaround their fortunes.
