Little League World Series 2015: Picks for Remainder of Saturday's LLWS Bracket

Steve SilvermanAug 22, 2015

The competitive phase of the Little League World Series will come to an end for the losers of Saturday's games in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

The rain-delayed tournament got underway Friday, with all 16 teams playing at Volunteer Stadium and Lamade Stadium. While the eight winners all earned a day off, the losers are back in action right away.

Since the Little League World Series is a double-elimination tournament, a second loss sends those teams into the consolation round. While that means they will get one more opportunity to play in Williamsport, they will no longer have a chance to leave the Keystone State as champions.

After an international game between the Dominican Republic and Australia, Northwest regional champion Wilshire Riverside of Oregon will meet Bowling Green of Kentucky, the Great Lakes regional champion.

Wilshire Riverside dropped a 1-0 decision to Pearland West of Texas despite a brilliant pitching performance from Dylan MacLean, who struck out 12 Pearland hitters in 5.2 innings before reaching the 85-pitch limit. Wilshire Riverside had unleashed a powerful offense in winning its regional and will try to get that attack going against Bowling Green.

The Great Lakes representatives ran into a powerful opponent in Sweetwater Valley, California, losing their opening game 14-2. The Great Lakes pitchers gave up six home runs in that game, and they will have to improve in that area if the team is going to avoid its second loss in a row.

The two teams will meet at Lamade Stadium at 3 p.m. ET, and the game will be televised by ABC.

Cranston Western of Rhode Island, the New England regional champion, will take on Webb City, Missouri, the Midwest regional champions, at Lamade Stadium at 8 p.m. ET.

The New England representatives got off to a difficult start when they were no-hit by Alex Edmondson of Northwood, South Carolina, the Southeast regional champions. Cranston Western's David Marchetti scored his team's only run when he walked and then came around on two wild pitches and a dropped third strike.

Webb City fell victim to Red Land's relentless offense Friday and was beaten by an 18-0 margin. Webb City manager Eric Parker said he had never seen such a relentless offense in the years he has managed in Little League.

"I've never seen anything like that team, I'll be honest with you," Parker told Geoff Morrow of PennLive.com. "We knew going in it's the real deal, that we'd have to play our best game to have a chance. I don't think we played a bad game. I just think they played phenomenally and hit the ball phenomenally."

Canadian representative British Columbia will square off with Asia-Pacific regional champion Chinese Taipei at Volunteer Stadium at 6 p.m. ET.

The Canadians dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to Mexico in their opening-round game even though pitcher Matthew Wilkinson struck out 16. The Canadian hitters couldn't get their offense going and lost when Mexico's Daniel Zargoza singled home the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Chinese Taipei rallied against Japan but ended up falling short, losing a 7-5 decision. Yen Cheng Yu hit a home run for Chinese Taipei, but that could not offset the two long balls hit by Japan's Kengo Tomita.
