Ngata, Lions Having "Positive" Negotiations on Extension
Monday, Aug. 17
Rand Getlin of NFL Network reported the Lions are working on a new contract for Ngata to keep him in Detroit beyond this year.
The Lions were looking at a possibly disastrous offseason after they lost not only Nick Fairley, but also Ndamukong Suh. Suh is the best defensive tackle in the league, while Fairley is a dynamic pass-rusher when healthy.
Trading for Ngata in March was a deft move and ensures the interior of the defensive line isn't a liability this year.
Perhaps having the 31-year-old on the roster will also help Gabe Wright's development after Detroit took the former Auburn Tiger in the fourth round of the 2015 draft.
Ngata is showing no signs of slowing down. In 12 games, he had 31 combined tackles and two sacks. Of course, he missed the final four games of the regular season after violating the NFL's performance-enhancing drug policy.
That suspension aside, Ngata has been a pillar of consistency, appearing in at least 14 regular-season games during his first eight years in the league. He also made five straight Pro Bowls from 2009 to 2013, in addition to first-team All-Pro honors in 2010 and 2011.
Re-signing Ngata to a one- or two-year extension would be a smart move for the Lions.
