Jordan Spieth at PGA Championship 2015: Saturday Leaderboard Score and Reaction
Jordan Spieth got off to a slow start on Saturday at the PGA Championship, but a strong finish with six birdies in his last eight holes has the American star firmly in contention for his third major win of the year.
The 22-year-old ended the third round with a 65, bringing his three-round score to 13 under par. As a result, he is second and two shots off the pace set by Jason Day.
Here's the full leaderboard from Whistling Straits in Sheboygan, Wisconsin:
It's been apparent throughout Spieth's run of success this year how quickly he's able to turn things on. That was never more obvious than on Saturday, as he started the day vanilla with eight straight pars after a birdie on the first hole.
Dan Jenkins of Golf Digest pinpointed a reason Spieth wasn't able to get anything going early in his round:
PGATour.com's Brian Wacker noted how well Spieth has done avoiding bad numbers through 54 holes:
Putting was something Spieth emphasized after shooting a 67 in the second round. He noted he wasn't pleased with his overall performance despite the low score, according to ESPN.com's Bob Harig:
"I'm hitting some quick draws when I'm playing a normal shot, which is weird. I haven't had that really this whole year. So I was kind of just trying to guide the ball off the tee. In order to keep shooting rounds like today, I'm going to need to drive the ball a little bit better and make a few more putts, which are really the two keys for me this weekend. Because it's just going to get more challenging with the pin locations and firmness of the greens.
"
After making the turn, Spieth's light clicked on. He had another par on 10 before rattling off three consecutive birdies, thanks to approach shots like this one on No. 13, via PGA Tour:
After back-to-back pars on 14 and 15, Spieth returned to his low-scoring ways with birdies on 16, 17 and 18 to move right into Day's rearview mirror.
This continues a trend of going into the clubhouse with momentum, as Spieth has shot under par on the back nine in each of the three rounds this weekend. This was his best effort so far with a 30 on the final nine holes.
It's possible Spieth is correcting his swing later in the rounds. His early round struggles haven't hurt him too much, as he's only two back.
Justin Ray of the Golf Channel made clear the cumulative effect of Spieth's dominance in majors this year:
Keep in mind Spieth still has one more day to play, so he could move past Tiger Woods for the top spot on that particular list.
Spieth is set up well heading into Sunday. He does need to prove that he's capable of making up a deficit on Sunday, which didn't happen in his two major wins this year.
Entering Sunday at the Masters and U.S. Open, Spieth was either in sole possession of the lead or tied for the lead. He did have a shot at getting in the playoff at the British Open after starting the final round one off the lead, though.
Whether that happens or not, Fox Sports' Shane Bacon reminded everyone of what Spieth's goals for 2015 were when the year started:
The field left the door wide open for Spieth, who was happy to make his presence felt. Closing the gap the way he did shows that his game is right where it needs to be at the perfect time with 18 holes to go.
The pressure is on Day to close strong on Sunday now that Spieth is hot on his heels. Spieth just has to let the opportunities come to him, as they did on Saturday.
