WWE's Best and Worst Booking Decisions for the Week of Aug. 9

Travis WakemanAug 15, 2015

Over the past week in WWE, advancement was made on the storylines that are helping shape the upcoming SummerSlam event.

Stephen Amell, star of the hit show Arrow, interjected himself into WWE action, and Randy Orton came within an eyelash of becoming WWE World Heavyweight champion? Did anyone think he was actually going to defeat Seth Rollins though?

WWE pulled the old interference card, having Sheamus come out and cost Orton the title. If you've watched WWE for more than a few months, you probably accurately predicted that very finish.

But even with that said, it doesn't earn the distinction for worst booking decision of the week. Instead, we take a closer look at the card for SummerSlam.

WWE added to the card with several matches this week. One of the additions is intriguing, while another just doesn't make much sense.

Best Booking Decision of the Week: Adding Three-Team Elimination Match to SummerSlam

WWE is really pushing the Divas division, and rightfully so. A great effort has been made to integrate the three women who have been moved up from NXT—Charlotte, Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks—into the division. That has translated into a much better product.

Nikki Bella has held the Divas title since Survivor Series last year. Her reign as champion is approaching a record in length, and she will almost certainly break that record, if for no other reason than to remove A.J. Lee from the history books.

But let's be honest: Nikki hasn't exactly had to take down the greatest competition the division has ever seen in order to achieve that long title reign.

The inclusion of Charlotte, Lynch and Banks has breathed new life into women's wrestling in WWE, and a three-team elimination match that has been added to SummerSlam is proof of that.

At SummerSlam, Team Bella (Nikki Bella, Brie Bella and Alicia Fox) will face Team B.A.D. (Sasha Banks, Naomi and Tamina) and PCB (Paige, Charlotte and Becky Lynch). These three teams will battle in what should be a wild elimination match.

When was the last time the Divas were put in a position to have a big match at SummerSlam? For these nine ladies, this will be a great opportunity to make the division an even bigger part of the show.

What Does It Mean Going Forward?

If you're not a fan of the Divas division or women's wrestling, you probably won't be too excited for this match. However, if you are, this is an important match for the future of the division.

WWE has done a solid job of pitting these three female factions against one another, and feuds for the future are being developed.

Regardless of who wins the match at SummerSlam, this will be a chance for these women to compete on one of the biggest stages in the entire industry and to make a lasting impression upon viewers.

WWE has made a concerted effort to push women's wrestling. This match will be integral for its future.

Worst Booking Decision of the Week: Making a Fatal 4-Way Tag Team Match

WWE has such a propensity to do this.

What happened to having two tag teams battle for the Tag Team titles? All we need is two. But as is often the case, WWE has a pay-per-view event coming up, and it feels the need to put tag team matches featuring multiple teams on the card.

The Prime Time Players and The New Day have created an intriguing rivalry. These two teams should be facing off for the titles at SummerSlam. Instead, Los Matadores and The Lucha Dragons have been thrown in for what seems like absolutely no reason to make it a Fatal 4-Way.

Could either one of those teams win the match? Certainly. But that would make even less sense.

Instead, these teams are being thrown into the match to make it more exciting, at least from the perspective of WWE.

Matches like this are fun from time to time, but WWE has just done it too often. It's not a bad thing to go back to the way things once were every now and then. For instance, having the two top teams in the company battle for the belts.

Why not have a 2-out-of-3 Falls match? For a lot of fans, that would be much more exciting than the match we'll see at SummerSlam.

What Does It Mean Going Forward?

It doesn't mean much, really. This is a match that is just being placed on the card to take up some time, and while a title change could happen, it would be a bad move.

The most likely scenario is that Titus O'Neil and Darren Young retain the belts and their feud with The New Day continues for the next couple of months.

If a title change is to take place, it would only make sense for The New Day to capture the gold. That way, the rivalry between them and The Prime Time Players could intensify and lead into a match between the two teams at one of the big events down the line.

This would be the same match that they should just be having now.
