PGA Championship 2015: Leaderboard Scores and Highlights from Friday

Joseph ZuckerAug 14, 2015

The 2015 PGA Championship nearly reached the halfway mark at Whistling Straits on Friday before steady rain showers forced a postponement of the second round. Neither Jason Day nor Matt Jones completed their rounds, but they own a share of the lead at nine under.

The top of the leaderboard remains pretty compact, with nine other golfers within at least three shots of Day and Jones:

The timing couldn't have been much worse for Day, who birdied the 11th, 12th and 13th holes before having to hit the clubhouse on No. 15. This tweet from PGA.com says it all:

The 27-year-old is still searching for his first major title. He's certainly no stranger to being in contention, per Golf Channel researcher Justin Ray:

"It's very difficult to try and close on a Sunday at a major championship," Day said Wednesday during the PGA Championship press conference, per Golf Digest's Joel Beall. "But the more times that I keep putting myself there, the more opportunities that I give myself, sooner or later, it's going to happen."

Historically, owning a 36-hole share of the lead isn't a guarantee for success, per the PGA Tour:

That's not good news for Jones, who was on the fourth hole before the postponement. The 35-year-old got off to a great start, birdieing three of his first four holes on the back nine. He leveled off a bit at the end of the back nine but gained another stroke with a birdie on No. 2.

Justin Rose sits at eight under with one hole to play. He, too, was on a bit of a hot streak before the postponement, having birded three of his previous four holes. Rose's round didn't get off to a great start after he double-bogeyed No. 4, but he recovered well the rest of the way.

Well within striking distance of the leaders are David Lingmerth, Harris English and Tony Finau. They sit two shots back at seven under for the tournament. Lingmerth is the only one of the three to have completed his round, sinking a long birdie putt before hitting the clubhouse:

Jordan Spieth was in second place at the time he finished his second round, but he currently sits three shots back in a tie for seventh. The 22-year-old displayed a deft touch on No. 18 when forced to escape one of Whistling Straits' numerous bunkers:

CBSSports.com's Kyle Porter is already envisioning a great final-round battle between Spieth and Day:

Another big name lurking a little further down the leaderboard is Dustin Johnson.

Contrary to many of his fellow golfers, the postponement might benefit Johnson. He had bogeyed three of his last four holes before the delay.

Things were looking good for the U.S. Open runner-up after a birdie on 10 moved him to eight under for the tournament. According to SportsCenter, Johnson is the first golfer since 1958 to own a share of the lead past the first round in three straight majors, doing it in the last three:

Saturday morning's start will offer Johnson a small chance to hit the reset button. He has four more holes to end his second round on a high note.

The PGA Tour announced Friday night the second round will resume at 7 a.m. CT. Among the 11 golfers at six under or better, seven still have work left to do before they progress to the third round.
