Tiger Woods at PGA Championship 2015: Friday Leaderboard Score and Reaction

Adam WellsAug 14, 2015

Tiger Woods will need to do some work if he wants to play the final two rounds at the PGA Championship. He will be on the course Saturday at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin, to finish his second round after weather caused play to be suspended. But he's two shots behind the projected cut line with a total score of four over.

Woods is currently one over through 13 holes in the second round, with play scheduled to resume at 7 a.m. Saturday.

Since finishing five under at the Masters, Woods has posted a total score of 27 over par at the U.S. Open, British Open and PGA Championship. He still has a chance to make the cut at the PGA Championship, as he hit consecutive birdies on the second and third holes Friday, providing some hope for another run over his remaining final five holes.

After Woods' opening round Thursday, ESPN Stats & Info noted how far his odds to win a major had fallen in comparison to other notable sports teams:

The descent for Woods has been steep and fast, so this performance at the PGA Championship is hardly surprising. It's come to the point where his making a cut at a major would be a big story, which is unfortunate for someone who used to have one of the greatest auras in all of sports.

Justin Ray of the Golf Channel noted Woods will have one more missed cut in majors over the last two years than he did during the run of dominance from 1997 to 2013 if he can't close strong Saturday:

With Woods at least out of the mix for a title this weekend, here's how the leaderboard stacks up:

Woods' second round resembled the beginning of Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities. It was the best of times as the 14-time major winner fired back-to-back birdies on No. 2 and 3 to start the day.

The third hole, in particular, suggested Woods was on to something after hitting this tee shot, as shown by PGA Tour:

Right after that hole, it was the worst of times for Woods as he gave those two shots right back with a double bogey on the fourth hole.

After that, Woods was mostly able to play things straight. His only non-par on the next nine holes was a bogey on eight that left him one over for the round and effectively sealed his fate.

You know things are bad when this is the most optimistic note the Golf Channel's Tiger Tracker on Twitter can think to tweet:

Yet there is still that small glimmer of hope because Woods started the round with two birdies. A night of rest could leave him refreshed and ready to take the course by storm—no pun intended, based on Friday's weather—when he starts Saturday morning.

It will be interesting to see how things play out for Woods if he does have an early exit from the PGA Championship. He released a statement that his season was rapidly approaching the finish line, via Kevin Kaduk of Yahoo Sports.

"The season is pretty much over very soon. ... It is what it is," Woods said.

Woods could play in the Wyndham Championship next weekend and has an outside shot to make the FedEx Cup field, which includes the top 125 players. But given how things have played out for him recently, perhaps an extended hiatus to try working on his swing and get some confidence back will do him good.

At Woods' age (39), a complete reinvention of his game could be the best thing for him. Pride wouldn't allow him to step away from the majors this year, but with those events almost in the rearview mirror, building for 2016 as soon as possible would be the best thing for him.
