Week 2 Recap

United once again wholly failed to convince, but they nevertheless came away with the all-important three points thanks to Adnan Januzaj's decisive goal.

Villa edged the proceedings thanks to some possession, but Chris Smalling was on hand to cut out promising balls into the box from home debutants Jordan Amavi and Idrissa Gueye.

Memphis Depay showed glimpses of quality going forward as he outpaced Leandro Bacuna to a hopeful punt upfield, but the Dutchman couldn't find the target with his header.

Januzaj scored the game's only goal shortly after when he fired Juan Mata's sublime ball—with the help of a deflection courtesy of Ciaran Clark—into the bottom right-hand corner.

Sky Sports Statto noted the success United have had against Villa in the past:

However, the Red Devils created little else going forward for the remainder of the match.

The Telegraph's Liam summarised the first half from United's perspective:

Micah Richards was unlucky not to win a penalty before the break, with referee Mike Dean failing to spot Matteo Darmian's arm around his neck.

There were few chances for either side in the second half, as both struggled to achieve fluency in midfield or up front, with Villa never looking close to grabbing an equaliser or United a second goal.

Louis van Gaal's side host Newcastle United in Week 3 and will need to put in a much-improved performance to safely overcome the Magpies.
