Team USA Basketball Showcase 2015: Score and Twitter Reaction for Blue vs. White
The 2015 Team USA Basketball Showcase took center stage in Las Vegas Thursday night, and the intrasquad scrimmage provided plenty of highlights for fans who turned out at UNLV's Thomas & Mack Center.
Although established stars like LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, Stephen Curry, Chris Paul, James Harden, Paul George, Carmelo Anthony and Jimmy Butler all opted not to participate in the exhibition, some of the program's up-and-coming talents were able to strut their stuff as the White Team emerged with a 134-128 victory over the Blue Team.
Detroit Pistons center Andre Drummond tallied 27 points and 16 rebounds in defeat, while reigning NBA Defensive Player of the Year Kawhi Leonard finished with 14 points in 24 minutes.
USA Today's Sam Amick provided a complete snapshot of the two modified rosters—which included last-second call-ups C.J. Watson, Amir Johnson, Terrence Jones, Elfrid Payton and Arron Afflalo—prior to tipoff:
But as Bleacher Report's Ethan Skolnick explained, most of the 2016 Olympic hopefuls who participated in Thursday's scrimmage are unlikely to qualify for the final roster before the red, white and blue head to Rio:
On that note, ESPN.com's Marc Stein reported a change in the national team's selection process midway through the first quarter:
The 40-minute showcase assumed the form of an NBA All-Star Game, with uptempo action reigning supreme. In other words, defense wasn't on either team's radar.
Brian Mahoney of the Associated Press used the demeanor of Team USA assistant coach Tom Thibodeau to capture the mood inside the gym:
Alley-oops were the most common mode of scoring throughout the evening as structured offensive sets were thrown out the window, but a couple of youngsters used the platform to their advantage early on.
DeMar DeRozan led the Blue Team with 13 points and four dimes at halftime, and as TSN's Josh Lewenberg observed, the Toronto Raptors swingman was entrusted with a fair share of the team's ball-handling duties:
2014 FIBA World Championship standout and Denver Nuggets forward Kenneth Faried also came to play, per NBA.com's Steve Aschburner:
Victor Oladipo's dunk over Michael Carter-Williams was one of the evening's most memorable highlights, as the NBA relayed on Instagram:
Chalk it up as Oladipo's revenge after Carter-Williams captured 2013-14 NBA Rookie of the Year honors.
However, the Milwaukee Bucks floor general did get in on the action by feeding Blake Griffin for a stunning off-the-backboard slam, per the NBA on Instagram:
Sacramento Kings center DeMarcus Cousins (24 points) peppered the scoring column thanks to powerful finishes below the free-throw line, but he couldn't convert from three-point range throughout the second half, per Skolnick:
Golden State Warriors sniper Klay Thompson also dazzled by nutmegging DeRozan with some nifty handles, per the NBA's Instagram account:
Although the Blue Team cut the White Team lead to three points midway through the fourth quarter, Thibodeau's squad didn't budge, and it emerged victorious in the high-powered shootout.
All in all, Thursday's exhibition served as a light appetizer for the 2016 Olympic Games.
Now the attention will turn to next year's competition in Rio as USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo and head coach Mike Krzyzewski seek to trim the roster down to 12 players.
And at this stage, the most pressing question facing them revolves around James' availability.
However, the two-time gold medalist is hopeful that circumstances a year from now will allow him to take the floor for the world's most esteemed national team.
"I've given everything to the NBA, and I gave it all to USAB as well," James said Wednesday, per Skolnick. "If I'm fortunate enough, if I'm healthy enough, and my family is willing to allow me to be part of it, that would be great. But we'll see."
Team USA will enter the 2016 Olympics as undisputed favorites to take home the gold with or without James, but watching LeBron compete for another top international honor before passing the torch to Anthony Davis and Co. would be special.
