Stephen Amell, Divas Tag Teams, Sheamus and More from the Hollywood Mailbag

Alfred KonuwaAug 13, 2015

WWE's aim to make SummerSlam as important as WrestleMania no longer seems like a well-intended mission statement. Brock's going to be there. Undertaker's going to be there. Cena's shaking off a broken nose to compete.

WWE even reached out to Hollywood to book Stephen Amell for a match. And while this doesn't seem like a big deal right now, it might be the beginning of a wise investment.

Question of the Week: Red and Green Arrow?

What's @amellywood's impact on Summerslam, will it be a quality match and are you impressed with his athleticism? https://t.co/RVUvabVczg

I think Amell will exceed expectations, especially those for a celebrity. Amell seems to legitimately enjoy the product. He hung around for much of the show, as opposed to simply appearing on camera during his segment. Also, he's not the traditional A-list—or even B-list—celebrity whom WWE goes after for an event like SummerSlam.

As far as impact, Amell has more to gain from this experience than WWE does, so he's going to be all-in. Some have criticized WWE for booking Amell because he's not a household name who will garner significant outside attention.

But I see this as a shrewd investment on WWE's part. Amell is a star on the rise, and if his career eventually takes off, hopefully he'll feel a certain loyalty to WWE for its partnership. An appearance by Amell at, say, SummerSlam 2020 could sell the pay-per-view on its own merit.

Just as WWE needs to invest in up-and-coming stars to solidify its future, it's not such a bad idea to take the same approach to budding celebrities.

Ambrose vs. Reigns?

"

@ThisIsNasty is there any chance of Dean Ambrose to turn on Roman Reigns at summerslam(iam sick of this"Bromance" thing😒)?

— Melanie Gomes (@Melitxix) August 13, 2015

"

I've been barking up this tree for months, and now people finally seem to realize the damage WWE is doing by refusing to give The Shield some distance.

Ambrose and Reigns are both running in place. WWE keeping them together is a painfully obvious sign that it has nothing spectacular for them.

In a perfect world, WWE would keep Ambrose and Reigns apart over the long haul. But if one was to turn on the other, this would rejuvenate both careers. Ambrose and Reigns have feuded with just about every significant heel on the roster, so why not face each other?

With all the talk of Ambrose and Reigns being family lately, it would increase the heel heat for whoever makes the heel turn.

Divas Tag Team Division?

"

@ThisIsNasty with the Divas division now crowded with talent, is it not Time to add a divas tag team title to keep everyone relevant ?

— Ross (@RossByNight) August 13, 2015

"

As I mentioned on the PodNasty Wrestling Podcast, WWE needs to show a long-term commitment to making several Divas stars before it even thinks about a tag team division.

A tag team division should only launch if WWE feels it needs an excuse to put more Divas on television. Right now, the Divas revolution is in its infant stages. Fans need to connect with just about all nine Divas in the mix before any further evolution.

Prior to a tag team division, WWE needs to also make sure that the NXT women's division is stockpiled with talent. A Divas tag team division on the main roster would likely require that many of the current NXT women are called up not only to compete with the older Divas but eventually replace them.

Another Summer Cash-In?

"

@ThisIsNasty, Can you see @WWESheamus cashing his MITB briefcase at Summerslam#SheamusforChampion

— NishantVerma (@562114Verma) August 13, 2015

"

Money in the Bank has been cashed in at SummerSlam multiple times, and I wouldn't be surprised if it happens this year as well. Sheamus doesn't have very much momentum right now, so he'll need a hot venue and a big reaction to make his cash-in come off as a big deal.

The Barclays Center would be the perfect stage for Sheamus to cash in. It would be poetic justice if he turned the Cena-Rollins match into a Triple Threat, thus pinning Cena to avoid an awkward heel-versus-heel conflict.

I'd like there to be a storyline hinting toward The Authority finding a replacement for Rollins as the face of WWE. There was a window for a while in which WWE was teasing tension between Rollins and The Authority.

This could have easily set the stage for The Authority to orchestrate Rollins' downfall via a Sheamus cash-in. Now that The Authority and Rollins are playing nice, however, Sheamus' cash-in will seem quite random and awkward if WWE doesn't play it right.
