WWE SmackDown: Spoiler-Free Preview for August 13

Ryan DilbertAug 13, 2015

The Aug. 13 edition of WWE SmackDown acts as a SummerSlam preview.

The show will feature variants of bouts set for the marquee pay-per-view, three times over. The Divas Elimination match gets trimmed down to a one-on-one affair. The tag team title Fatal 4-Way gets cut in half.

And Roman Reigns and Luke Harper will represent their respective "families" in singles action.

Monday's Raw saw a number of new matches become official for SummerSlam. Thursday's SmackDown now looks to build up those contests by having some of the gladiators involved collide early.

The Moda Center in Portland, Oregon, hosted all the action Tuesday night. SmackDown, though, won't air on Syfy until 8 p.m. ET on Thursday. That gives fans plenty of time to read the many spoilers available on the Internet.

The following preview takes a look at all the matches SmackDown will offer while not giving away the results.

Charlotte vs. Naomi

Arguably the two best athletes in the women's division face off on SmackDown.

On Monday night, Charlotte watched from the announce desk as Naomi and the rest of Team B.A.D. lost to the Bellas and Alicia Fox. Naomi, though, teamed with Sasha Banks on last week's SmackDown to take down Charlotte and Becky Lynch.

That clash ended awkwardly, with Naomi getting a roll-up pin that seemed to upset both women, perhaps a sign that the finish wasn't what was scripted.

These women get a chance to redeem themselves here if that's the case. And storyline-wise, Charlotte will be looking to avoid another loss against Team B.A.D.'s de facto leader.

Last week, their singles match ended in a brawl, leading to The Authority pulling a Teddy Long and making it a tag match. Can Naomi and Charlotte avoid that same fate here? Is one of the factions of the women's division going to go on a run before SummerSlam?

Luke Harper vs. Roman Reigns

Bray Wyatt is sure to be lurking as Harper goes to battle. Dean Ambrose promises to be within striking distance as well. He and Reigns have been as close as of late as they were as part of The Shield.

This collision is designed to churn up more animosity between these four men before their "family versus family" match at SummerSlam.

Harper is coming off an emphatic win against Ambrose on Monday's Raw. He can make it two former Shield members in a row if he can pull off the upset against a man WWE rarely lets lose.

Reigns and Harper have had solid chemistry in the past. But more than the quality of the action here, the key takeaway will be what WWE does to further this feud.

The story's momentum has slowed recently. An explosive moment is needed, but the company may be saving that for Raw instead.

The Prime Time Players vs. The New Day

Half of the squads in SummerSlam's four-team championship matchup square off. The tag champs and The New Day are the two most important teams in that mix anyway.

There are the actual rivals here. The Lucha Dragons and Los Matadores feel like add-ons for the sake of adding some more high-flying highlights.

Will WWE find ways to increase the bad blood between The Prime Time Players and the clap-happy heels? Big E and Kofi Kingston can weaken their SummerSlam opponents here, or just gain some momentum by knocking them off in non-title action. This devolving into a brawl wouldn't surprise anyone either.

The most appealing aspect of this match is The New Day's antics. They have been flourishing, finding new ways to be grating, self-congratulating jerks.

SmackDown is the latest chance to showcase their shtick.

Cesaro and Neville vs. Seth Rollins and Kevin Owens

SmackDown continues to make the Owens vs. Cesaro feud a high priority. Those two former Ring of Honor stars have made Thursday nights their battleground time and time again.

This time around, they are part of two intriguing pairings.

Neville should be the lightning to Cesaro's thunder as Tyson Kidd was before his injury. That's quite the fun team. As for Owens, he gets the WWE champ to fight alongside him.

Rollins could sure use a win after tapping out to John Cena a few weeks back and having Randy Orton nearly beat him on Monday's Raw.

Fans won't be expecting Cena to make an appearance, as he's been taking it easy post-nasal surgery. So instead of the world champ going after his SummerSlam opponent, he will enter what has the potential be something special in terms of pure in-ring action.

Thursday's SmackDown looks to be heavy on SummerSlam buildup on the undercard. The main event on its own, though, should be enough to convince fans to tune in.
