Updated World Cup Golden Boot Standings After Kylian Mbappe Goals Before Messi, Argentina vs. Spain

Paul KasabianJul 18, 2026

Kylian Mbappé now leads the Golden Boot race with 10 goals after scoring twice in France's 6-4 loss to England in the FIFA World Cup's third-place game on Saturday in Miami.

He's now the favorite to win the honor this year, but Argentina star Lionel Messi still has a fighting chance to take the honor.

Messi stands with eight goals right now with one match to go when he leads Argentina in the World Cup Final against Spain on Sunday.

Here's a look at all players with five or more goals in this year's World Cup, including Spain's Mikel Oyarzabal, who can climb up the list Sunday as well.

Golden Boot List (5 or more Goals)

  1. Kylian Mbappé (10 goals)
  2. Lionel Messi (8 goals)
  3. Jude Bellingham (7 goals)
  4. Erling Haaland (7 goals)
  5. Ousmane Dembélé (6 goals)
  6. Harry Kane (6 goals)
  7. Mikel Oyarzabal (5 goals)

If Mbappé holds onto the Golden Boot lead, the Real Madrid star will have finished as the top goalscorer in the World Cup, La Liga (25) and Champions League (15) this year.

The record for the most goals all time in a single World Cup is 13, set by France's Just Fontaine in 1958 over six matches.

That will almost certainly stand through Sunday, but Messi can win the Golden Boot. Realistically, he needs two goals and one assist or a hat trick.

Messi will tie Mbappé with a brace. The tiebreaker is assists, and both players have four right now. The second tiebreaker is fewest minutes played, and realistically, Mbappe will almost certainly win that. He has 769 minutes played right now, and Messi is at 712, or 57 fewer minutes at the moment. Barring an injury, Messi will certainly be playing more than 57 minutes on Sunday.

As far as Saturday goes, Mbappé nearly led France to a furious comeback win after they were down 4-0 at halftime. He scored in the 48th minute and again in the 66th minute.

In between, Bradley Barcola scored in the 54th minute, and those goals put France behind 4-3.

However, Bukayo Saka's third goal (via penalty kick) put England up 5-3 in the 87th minute. Ousmane Dembélé got one back late in stoppage time to halve the deficit, but Jude Bellingham scored his seventh goal of the tournament shortly thereafter for England's 6-4 win.

Mbappé is now tied for third on the list of goalscorers in a single World Cup with Germany's Gerd Müller (1970). Hungary's Sándor Kocsis is second (1954).

However, for the moment, Mbappé has scored the most World Cup goals ever with 22, or one per match played over his three World Cups.

Messi is just one behind, though, at 21.

Kickoff on Sunday is set for 3 p.m. ET in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
