New LeBron James Rumors on Spurs' Talks With Star Amid Cavs, Heat, 76ers Buzz in NBA Free Agency
The San Antonio Spurs might have considered responding to their 2026 NBA Finals loss by pairing up Victor Wembanyama and LeBron James.
ESPN's Dave McMenamin said on Friday's episode of Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective he felt there "was some sort of Spurs dialogue" regarding James' free agency.
"I don't know whether it was pitching, but it was some sort of dialogue," McMenamin said.
ESPN's Brian Windhorst responded: "If there's a premium Klutch client on the team, they probably did, which in the case of San Antonio, the Spurs clearly have that."
Spurs star De'Aaron Fox is represented by the same agent as James, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul.
ESPN's Shams Charania recently reported (h/t McMenamin) that Paul has been soliciting pitches for James in the form of voice memos made by team executives.
The Spurs are not considered as frontrunners to sign James in the wake of his departure from the Los Angeles Lakers, per Charania.
Charania recently named the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers as frontrunners ahead of the Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves in the race to sign the NBA's all-time leading scorer.
When asked if the Spurs would consider joining in on the bidding, Spurs CEO R.C. Buford recently told L'Equipe's Maxime Aubin: "What I will say is that we're excited about the team we've been able to keep together — and to add Tobias [Harris] to that, plus our young draft picks. I think our history shows how we build teams."
James is reportedly interested in filming his 24th NBA season for a documentary, per Yahoo Sports' Kevin O'Connor.
Pairing up with a young star like Wembanyama and looking to help a franchise win its first title in over a decade could make for an intriguing storyline should both the Spurs and James ultimately decide to go that route.
