New LeBron James Rumors Update NBA Free Agency Decision Timeline Amid Cavs, Heat Buzz

LeBron James is getting closer to deciding which team he'll sign with in free agency, according to ESPN's Dave McMenamin.

"Multiple sources familiar with his thinking told me in the last 24 hours that he is truly getting much closer to a decision," McMenamin reported during a Friday appearance on SportsCenter (0:14 mark). "Talking to people around the league, Adam Silver obviously, everyone is just hoping it comes as early as next week. Possibly in the early part of next week."

ESPN's Shams Charania reported Thursday that the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors and Philadelphia 76ers were perceived to be in a group by themselves as they look to sign James.

Cleveland and Miami both give James the opportunity to return to organizations that he previously spent time with.

The Cavs are coming off a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals during their 2025-26 campaign, while the Heat recently acquired Giannis Antetokounmpo to pair alongside Bam Adebayo in a blockbuster trade with the Milwaukee Bucks.

James has taken a patient approach to free agency, although NBA commissioner Adam Silver revealed that the league can't finalize the 2026-27 schedule until the four-time MVP chooses a new team.

"We have to finish up the schedule and where LeBron plays affects the schedule... It will influence how we set the schedule — opening week, Christmas," Silver said Thursday. "So I need him to make a decision."

James later said the schedule delay was "crazy" at Fanatics Fest on Friday, but still wasn't ready to make an announcement.

While the frontrunner for the 22-time All-Star's services next season is still unknown, it appears as though a decision could come soon.
