Updated World Cup Final Weather Forecast, Rumors on Latest Plans amid Wildfire Smoke Concerns
The 2026 FIFA World Cup Final between Argentina and Spain on Sunday in East Rutherford, New Jersey, is reportedly not in danger of being moved or postponed despite air quality issues in the New York-New Jersey area.
According to ESPN, the World Cup final is "not under any threat," and the air quality situation is "not concerning" to FIFA.
Weather.com lists the air quality in East Rutherford at 173 for Friday, which is categorized as "unhealthy."
Air quality has been a major concern in the northeastern part of the United States in recent days as a result of raging wildfires in Canada, causing some to question the viability of the World Cup final being played in New Jersey.
However, FIFA is reportedly satisfied with the notion that the air quality and forecast should improve in the coming days.
The 2026 World Cup final was set this week when Spain blanked France 2-0 and Argentina came from behind to beat England 2-1 in the semifinals.
Argentina, led by superstar forward Lionel Messi, are in search of their second consecutive World Cup win. If they accomplish the feat, it will mark the first time La Albiceleste have won back-to-back World Cups.
Meanwhile, Spain are in the World Cup final for only the second time in their history, and they are pursuing a second World Cup title after previously winning it all in 2010.
The third-place playoff between France and England will be played Saturday at 5 p.m. ET.
As for Sunday's final, it will mark the first World Cup final ever played in the New York-New Jersey area, as the first FIFA World Cup played in the United States in 1994 concluded at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.
