LeBron James Pursuit Discussed by 76ers President Gansey amid Latest NBA Free Agency Rumors
The Philadelphia 76ers are firmly in the race for star free agent LeBron James, and team president Mike Gansey discussed the potential signing on Monday.
Gansey told The Athletic's Tony Jones that should James head to Philadelphia, "we're going to be even better."
"We've had conversations with Rich, really since the Jaylen trade," Gansey said. "LeBron and his camp have kept quiet, and there has been speculation for different teams. But we'd obviously love to have LeBron. I respect the heck out of him. In my opinion, he's the best player of all time. I think his decision is dragging out because he has a lot of good options and he wants to figure it out. He would obviously add a lot to our team. But at the end of the day, I know he's going to make the right decision for him and his family."
The 76ers certainly make for an enticing landing spot after trading for former Finals MVP Jaylen Brown. A core of Brown, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey would mean that James could, for the first time in his career, not have to carry the weight on offense.
It would also give the all-time great a chance to compete for an elusive fifth championship.
But other teams in the mix also have plenty to offer James.
Along with the Sixers, James' top landing spots are reported to be the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves. All of those teams are contenders, or at least would be with the addition of James.
The Cavs have the benefit of nostalgia on their side, as James could return to his hometown team and the squad that drafted him, making for a storybook ending to his legendary career. He could also be the tertiary option on offense with Donovan Mitchell and James Harden on the roster.
The Warriors would give James the chance to stay close to his home base in Southern California, plus the opportunity to play alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green for the first time in his career.
Front Office Sports' Alex Schiffer reported Monday that executives believe the race is down to the Cavs and Warriors, though that isn't stopping the 76ers and other teams from continuing to pursue the four-time MVP.
James' decision could be coming soon, as Rich Paul told NBA insider Chris Haynes that James has "all the information needed" to choose his next destination.
