Why Lakers Need to Hang On to Vanderbilt
The deal comes as the Lakers continue to pursue free agent forward Jonathan Kuminga.
Williams, the No. 10 overall pick out of Stanford in 2021, spent the first three years of his career with the Memphis Grizzlies before being traded to Brooklyn ahead of the 2024-25 campaign. He put together the best season of his career in 2025-26, averaging 10.2 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game while playing 22.9 minutes per contest off the bench.
He managed to post solid numbers on a struggling Nets squad, but whether he can continue to play a valuable role off the Lakers' bench remains to be seen.
With the addition of Williams, questions now arise about how the Lakers plan to add Kuminga.
Since all of the roster spots are now filled, the Lakers would need to shed a player or two to make room for Kuminga, who reportedly is eyeing a deal worth $25 million per year.
Los Angeles could look to move off of a player like Dalton Knecht or Jarred Vanderbilt, neither of whom played a huge role on last year's team. Knecht is still on a rookie deal and carries a $4.2 million cap hit next year, while Vanderbilt has a cap hit of $12.4 million.
Of course, with LeBron James no longer on the squad, parting ways with Bronny James could also be an option, though it's worth noting that his $2.3 million salary is already guaranteed for the upcoming season.
