Gianni VerschuerenAug 11, 2015

The 2015 Capital One Cup kicked off on Tuesday, and the first round of this year's competition immediately served up a number of stunning upsets. Blackburn Rovers, Brentford and Burnley are but three of the top clubs forced to pack their bags after a wild opening matchday.

Brentford were hammered 4-0 by Oxford United in front of their own fans, Burnley suffered a 1-0 defeat at Port Vale and Blackburn Rovers lost at home against Shrewsbury Town. Queens Park Rangers, Hull City and last year's semi-finalists Sheffield United all progressed to the next round.

Here's a look at the results from Tuesday's action, courtesy of the Capital One Cup's official Twitter account:

Hull City needed penalties to avoid an embarrassing defeat at the hands of Accrington Stanley on Tuesday, as Arsenal loanee Chuba Akpom continued to impress for the Tigers. The youngster opened the score early in extra time, but three more goals led to a penalty shootout, where Matt Crooks missed the decisive penalty.

The Tigers looked toothless during the first 90 minutes, with Footy Accumulators referencing the magic of Cup nights as a possible excuse:

The visitors came close to scoring in the 82nd minute, but a mad goal-line scramble somehow didn't result in the ball crossing the line. The Championship side eventually got the job done in the shootout, which is more than you could say from a host of other clubs.

For Stanley, this was an incredible matchup, and no one likely enjoyed it more than Josh Windass, son of former Hull City star Dean Windass. As reported by Ryan Percival of the Capital One Cup's official website, Windass told Stanley's website how delighted he was with the draw:

"

I can’t believe it, it’s a quality draw. I wanted Huddersfield which is my former club but Hull is even better.

It would be a dream to score against them. I have had loads of texts and calls, including my dad.

He comes to watch me when he can but he will have mixed loyalties for this one. I guess he will be supporting Hull so I will have to do my best to upset him.

"

Queens Park Rangers cruised to a 3-0 win over Yeovil Town, with Sebastian Polter and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas giving the visitors a comfortable lead heading into half-time. Nedum Onuoha added a third goal in the second half.

The biggest shock of the night was undoubtedly Oxford United's 4-0 win over Brentford, with the visitors leading by three goals after just 12 minutes. Footy Accumulators couldn't help itself:

The League Two outfit dominated Brentford from start to finish, once again showing that Cup football can serve up the craziest scenarios. Liam Sercombe, Danny Hylton, Kemar Roofe and Johnny Mullin all managed to get on the scoresheet.

But there were more big shocks in store. As shared by Richard Jolly of ESPN, a number of clubs playing at the highest level of football in England until very recently all suffered defeats:

Byron Moore scored the only goal to give Port Vale a shock win over Burnley, who were relegated from the Premier League just months ago, and Blackpool fell 3-0 at the hands of Northampton Town.

Chris Hackett, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Sam Hoskins all scored in the span of nine minutes, giving Northampton a three-goal lead heading into half-time, and the Blackpool Gazette's William Watt could only hope the Tangerines entered the match with a clear focus on their league campaign:

Other notable results include Millwall's loss against Barnet, Sheffield United's win over Morecambe and Wigan Athletics' 2-1 loss against Bury.

Four matches of the first round of the Capital One Cup remain to be played, and three of those are on the schedule for Wednesday. Middlesbrough will visit Oldham Athletic. Meanwhile, Portsmouth host Derby County and Crewe Alexandra take on Preston North End. On Thursday, Leeds United and Doncaster Rovers will conclude the first round.
