WWE SummerSlam 2015: Undercard Matches Fans Deserve to See
There's been a flurry of activity involving WWE SummerSlam this week, with six matches announced since Smackdown last Thursday.
Many of those announcements, however, have been anticlimactic. John Cena accepting Seth Rollins' title-for-title challenge had been expected. Most of the WWE Universe figured Arrow star Stephen Amell would be involved in a match with Stardust, and on Monday night a tag team bout featuring the two was made.
The obligatory tag team title defense for The Prime Time Players and The New Day was set, albeit in a Fatal 4-Way match with two of the roster's more disappointing teams in The Lucha Dragons and Los Matadores. Ryback will defend his Intercontinental Championship in a match that was postponed a month due to health issues, while the newly re-formed Wyatt Family will take on The Shield 2.0.

Modern-Day Dream Matches 💭

Most Likely Backlash Heel/Face Turns 🎭
Finally, The Divas Revolution officially begins in Brooklyn on August 22 with a Triple Threat match with bragging rights on the line.
Some of these matches will entertain more than others, for sure. But there's so much more that can be done—and, frankly, should have been done— to truly make SummerSlam the pre-eminent event on the WWE calendar in 2015.
Elimination Match to Determine the No. 1 Contender for the Divas Championship
Since their introduction, Becky Lynch, Sasha Banks and Charlotte have helped elevate the in-ring competition. Even Brie Bella is being made to look like a formidable opponent, which is quite the statement.
One problem: Aside from bragging rights, there are no stakes in this arms race. These matches have been entertaining, but the lack of incentive is starting to wear. WWE needs to introduce that incentive.
With eight non-titleholders among the group of three teams, some of these women need to start rising up to the challenge, or at least appear to challenge for the WWE Divas Championship. Creating that hierarchy by holding an elimination match between them would start the path toward Night of Champions.
It helps lend credibility not only to the Divas Revolution, but also to Nikki Bella's title reign, which has been lost amidst the call-ups from NXT.
The champion hasn't defended her title for nearly two months (July 4's Brock Lesnar: The Beast in the East live special). She hasn't wrestled a singles match in the same amount of time. Sadly, it doesn't look like that will change much on the way to Nikki's #Roadto300.
Make it a 4 Corners match with hot tags. Make it a Battle Royal. Make it a Rumble match. But at least make it have something on the line for the women who have been putting it on the line to fuel the Divas Revolution.
Cesaro vs. Kevin Owens in a 2-out-of-3 Falls Match
Sooner or later, Kevin Owens vs. Cesaro will be booked for SummerSlam. When it is announced, it should be a featured bout because it will quite possibly steal the show at the Barclays Center.
No wrestler is hotter right now than Cesaro, both from an in-ring perspective and a crowd perspective. Each and every week, Cesaro has been stealing the show on Monday nights with his offense, and it isn't even close.
His matches against John Cena and Seth Rollins have been stellar. As an added bonus, he's getting more comfortable on the microphone, making just enough headway in that department to be able to at least hold his own in a feud with anyone on the roster.
As hot as Cesaro is, Owens might just be his polar opposite. Since debuting on the main roster with a win against Cena at Elimination Chamber, Owens hasn't been able to catch a break from WWE Creative. He loses his feud with Cena and his NXT title to Finn Balor. He's even losing his fanbase to Cesaro, who's done everything a smark could ever ask of an underutilized talent.
Pitting these two against each other in a single match wouldn't suffice. The fans deserve more. And with SummerSlam extended to a four-hour event, there couldn't be a better duo to prop up the middle of the extravaganza with a 2-out-of-3 Falls match.
It would be the ultimate grudge match for these two supremely talented wrestlers, and one that would allow each of them to head into new feuds at Night of Champions. A one-night affair to see who really is the King of the Internet Wrestling Community.
Sheamus vs. Randy Orton for the Money in the Bank Briefcase
It wouldn't be surprising to see this match appear on a Most Likely to Disappoint or Least Promising Storylines article in the near future. So why the love for another Sheamus-Randy Orton tilt?
Monday night's finale to Raw allows this feud to breathe a little more than it had in the past. Before, it was a simple grudge match with, as WWE announcer Michael Cole might say, two guys who just don't like each other.
Now, there's more to this feud. Sheamus cost The Viper the WWE Heavyweight Championship. Orton did the same to The Celtic Warrior moments later. Both can stake a claim, and it needs to be settled.
Instead of the same match we've seen countless times from these two, make this match for the Money in the Bank briefcase.
The Money in the Bank briefcase has been defended five times since 2005, the last time in 2012 when Dolph Ziggler defeated Cena in a ladder match at WWE TLC—a match held at the Barclays Center.
| Year | Briefcase Holder | Opponent | Result | Note |
| 2005 | Edge | Matt Hardy | W | |
| 2006 | Rob Van Dam | Shelton Benjamin | W | Contract vs. Championship Match (IC title) |
| 2007 | Mr. Kennedy | Edge | L | |
| 2012 | Dolph Ziggler | Chris Jericho | W | Contract vs. Career Match |
| 2012 | Dolph Ziggler | John Cena | W |
Sheamus and Orton have put on good matches before, including earlier this year at WWE Battleground. The problem WWE Creative has run into is overuse, but that shouldn't be held against the wrestlers. Especially not when such a natural, logical angle can be used.
