Argentina Pull Off Comeback for the Ages
Never underestimate the resolve of champions.
Argentina overcame a 2-0 deficit against Egypt on Tuesday, scoring three goals within a 13-minute span late in the second half to secure a breathtaking 3-2 win.
Enzo Fernández's header in stoppage time was the winner, while Lionel Messi equalized in the 83rd minute, making up for a penalty miss in the first half.
Cristian Romero got the comeback going in the 79th minute after Egypt's Yasser Ibrahim gave his team the lead in the 15th minute and Mostafa Zico made it two in the 67th.
VAR once again had its say in a match, disallowing an Egypt goal following a beautiful counterattack after the move was deemed to have started with an Egyptian foul. It was a controversial decision, though arguably the correct ruling.
In the end, the result was both harsh on Egypt—who were absolutely brilliant defensively for the first 78 minutes and absolutely clinical when given chances—and probably reflective of the overall flow of the match.
Argentina controlled 64 percent of possession, held the advantage in xG (2.90 to 0.97), outshot Egypt 19-5 (7-2 on goal) and won six corners to just one for Egypt. Had Messi not missed that penalty, the first half might have looked far different.
In the end, the better team probably won, but not without serious adversity or drama. Full marks to Egypt, who played valiantly, but Messi and the Argentines are defending champions for a reason.
