Cristiano Ronaldo Visibility Emotional in Videos, Photos After Final FIFA World Cup Match
Cristiano Ronaldo is finished on the World Cup stage.
The Portugal star confirmed this year's tournament would be his final one on Sunday and then saw his team's run come to an end in the round of 16 with Monday's 1-0 loss to Spain.
He was emotional in the aftermath:
On Sunday, he told reporters, "Yes, it's my last one. Let's go and enjoy it."
That this was his last World Cup was not exactly surprising. After all, he would be 45 years old during the 2030 tournament and is no longer at the peak of his legendary career.
Still, he had some moments in this year's edition with two goals in Portugal's group-stage win over Uzbekistan and another via a penalty kick in the round of 32 win over Croatia.
This was his record sixth World Cup after he debuted for Portugal in 2003. In all, Ronaldo tallied 11 goals in 27 World Cup matches and helped lead his nation to the quarterfinals in 2022 and a fourth-place finish in 2006.
Yet he fell one win short of the quarterfinals this year.
It was not for a lack of chances, as Ronaldo finished with three shots and two shots on target. One of them was a well-placed flick shot that seemed to be going straight in until Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón made a diving save.
That preserved the scoreless tie, and Spain's Mikel Merino broke it with his stoppage-time winner after breaking free in the middle of the Portugal defense.
The end result was heartbreak for Ronaldo and a quarterfinal spot for Spain, where they will face either the United States or Belgium.
