The Most Legendary Throwback Jerseys in Sports

Giancarlo Ferrari-KingAug 13, 2015

There was a time when throwback jerseys ran the world. Around the same time Justin Timberlake was wearing denim tuxedos, these vintage jerseys were being worn by celebrities and civilians alike.

Now, with nostalgia running at an all-time high, our minds were made up. We were going to find the 10 most legendary throwback jerseys in sports history and bring them to you.

Considering there were so many different jerseys to choose from, we really had to get our research straight. After sifting through countless jerseys and eras, we finally settled on the 10 best.

Start the slideshow below, and find out which jerseys made the list.

San Diego Chargers: 1968-1979

1 of 10

The San Diego Chargers powder blue uniforms are one of the classiest joints in the business. From 1968 all the way up until 1979, the Chargers brought out some variation of the sultry blue shirts.

The jerseys were cool because they perfectly capture those nostalgic California vibes. A simple blue base coat, layered with white and yellow bursts, was a lighthearted way of representing the team.

Even though the uniforms have shifted over time, the powder blue throwbacks still get broken out every now and again. It's evidence that these jerseys will always have a place in our hearts.

Orlando Magic: 1989-1998

2 of 10

Pinstripes were the name of the game for the Orlando Magic during the '90s. That delightful Penny Hardaway and Shaquille O'Neal era provided us with great hoops and even better jerseys.

That glittery Magic logo gently placed over pinstripes was crazy at the time. Like a good bottle of merlot, the uniforms have aged beautifully. Today they look even better than before.

Too bad the team doesn't have Shaq and Penny out there making a scene. That would really put the icing on the proverbial throwback-jersey cake.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim: 1973-1988

3 of 10

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have been a fixture in California for 54 years now. They may have changed their club name a few times, but the franchise remains intact.

One of the coolest throwback jerseys comes from team's days as the California Angels. The red, gray and blue uniform hasn't fallen out of style, even though the Angels have evolved.

Worn by greats like Nolan Ryan, Rod Carew and Reggie Jackson, these throwbacks will live on forever thanks to a timeless design.

Anaheim Ducks: 1993-2006

4 of 10

Having the name and plot of a movie launch your franchise is next-level spectacular. In the case of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, they were born from Emilio Estevez's on-screen performance and the financial backing of the Walt Disney Company.

The uniforms the club debuted with were even used in the film's sequel, D2: The Mighty Ducks. The fact that Adam Banks, Charlie Conway and actual NHL players wore these throwback jerseys makes them that much better.

Hockey sweaters don't get any cooler than the Anaheim Ducks' '90s look and feel. There's way too much nostalgia pumped into those joints to be brushed aside.

Dallas Cowboys: 1960-1963

5 of 10

Would it be too much to ask for the Dallas Cowboys to use these throwbacks as their regular uniforms? I mean, come on, these uniforms are crazy.

First unveiled during the 1960s, the Cowboys traditional blue and white colorway still holds a ton of weight in today's fashion world. Those looking to spend some coin on a throwback jersey that will never go out of style should saddle up and reach for this vintage treasure.

Charlotte Hornets: 1988-1996

6 of 10

The year was 1988. A time when the Charlotte Hornets and their jerseys broke barriers. Joe Delessio of Sports on Earth wrote about the movement in a wonderful article.

Explaining what took place after the team started rocking these teal-and-white joints, Delessio said, "If a color scheme could define a decade, then the '90s were the era of teal and purple."

He's right. The Hornets defined the ‘90s. Maybe not in terms of wins, but definitely fashion-wise. Those teal colors oozed tons of '90s nostalgia, and we loved every second of it.

Los Angeles Kings: 1988-1995

7 of 10

Wayne Gretzky arriving in Los Angeles prior to the 1988-89 season turned that city in a hockey town. He was an established star, and his presence was needed to fill seats.

Besides his outstanding levels of production, Gretzky’s time in Los Angeles was marked by the jerseys he wore. These black, white and silver fireballs were a retro version of the Kings' current garments.

Looking back, the jerseys are even cooler because they eerily reflect the colors of the Oakland Raiders—who were stationed in L.A. at the time. The black and silver has become synonymous with that era in Los Angeles sports.

Wearing this jersey is a unique way to honor "The Great One" and his version of the Kings.

Miami Heat: 1988-1999

8 of 10

The Miami Heat's original uniforms were pretty much the same from 1988 up until they switched things around in 1999. Besides a few adjustments here and there, the jerseys stuck to the same look and feel.

It's a shame they didn't keep them in rotation longer. With all due respect to the club's current attire, the old school Heat jerseys were blazing-hot.

The red, black and white versions all were dope. And as odd as this may sound, the jersey itself represented the city of Miami really well. Perhaps that's why it's become a staple of South Beach residents for close to 30 years.

Los Angeles/St. Louis Rams: 1973-1999

9 of 10

For 26 years, the Rams wore perhaps the most recognizable uniforms in all of sports.

The wavy yellow-and-blue jerseys defined the team's lush history before they switched to a duller color scheme. Between Eric Dickerson, Kurt Warner, Marshall Faulk and Torry Holt, some great NFL talents were covered in these timeless pieces over the years.

Join the greats and secure one of these throwbacks today. Rams fan or not, these jerseys make for a great addition to any closet.

Detroit Pistons: 1995-2001

10 of 10

Don't get it twisted, the Detroit Pistons current uniforms are fantastic. But back in 1995, they were even better.

Grant Hill was the biggest name to rock the Pistons '90s attire. A teal-and-white blend, fueled by an aggressive logo, was the formula used to create these mesh masterpieces.

Kind of like the Charlotte Hornets, these Pistons throwbacks are a quintessential staple of '90s culture. If you can find it, don't pass up on a Grant Hill edition. Stroking jumpers in that No. 33 is a beautiful way to end your summer.
