England's Jordan Henderson Set for Surgery After Injury Jumping over Ad Wall on Video at World Cup
Jordan Henderson's 2026 World Cup is over after the England midfielder suffered a wrist injury while celebrating Sunday's 3-2 win over Mexico.
Henderson landed awkwardly after jumping over the ad boards on the field:
The Athletic's James Pearce and Jack Pitt-Brooke reported the injury is bad enough to require surgery, which rules him out for the remainder of the tournament.
Henderson's absence shouldn't affect England too much.
The 36-year-old was a somewhat surprising inclusion in the squad because of his age and the lower workload he has maintained since returning to the Premier League with Brentford.
Henderson was an unused substitute in all but one of the Three Lions' World Cup matches so far. In his lone appearance, he entered in the 84th minute with England already up 2-0 on Panama.
Coach Thomas Tuchel has settled on using Elliot Anderson and Declan Rice as his two deep midfielders and Jude Bellingham in a more advanced role. Even with Henderson unavailable, Tuchel can bring Kobbie Mainoo, Morgan Rogers or Eberechi Eze off the bench.
Thanks to his bad luck, Henderson is likely to earn some special distinction moving forward. Despite not playing against Mexico, he came away injured and received a yellow card. That's the kind of company a player likes to avoid.
