UEFA Rips Folarin Balogun Red-Card Decision as 'Incomprehensible' Before USA-Belgium World Cup Match

Joseph ZuckerJul 6, 2026

UEFA says that FIFA "crossed a red line" when it suspended the punishment for United States men's national team striker Folarin Balogun.

The organization said in a statement Monday that "we express our disbelief at such an unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable decision":

"Football, like any other sports, relies on rules, which are the basis for fair, honest and transparent competition. Sometimes rules are open to interpretation. In this case not. A minimum automatic suspension of one match following a red card is not a discretionary option and does not require the decision of a competent body to be enacted. It is a principle embedded in regulations, which cannot be made subject to exceptions, let alone in the middle of a tournament where several other players have been in the same situation and regularly served their suspension.

"When the certainty of rules is no longer guaranteed by its guardians, the integrity of the game is at stake and the credibility of a competition is undermined. Equally, such decision creates a precedent in the ongoing tournament, where similar situations will now require an equal treatment, to the detriment of the competition."

Balogun was originally set to miss Monday's 2026 World Cup match against Belgium after receiving a red card in the 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, FIFA said his one-match ban will be deferred for one year.

According to The Athletic's Adam Crafton, the governing body is allowing for Belgium to appeal the ruling.

UEFA's statement follows a similarly worded one from the Royal Belgian Football Association. The federation said it was "astonished" by FIFA's decision as it contradicts guidelines in both the FIFA Disciplinary Code and World Cup regulations.

"In order to safeguard the legitimate rights of all participating teams and to protect the fundamental principles of fair play in our sport, both at this FIFA World Cup and at future editions of the tournament, the RBFA is investigating all potential options," the federation said.

Belgium coach Rudi Garcia was equally incredulous.

"I didn't know that at the World Cup, the 5th of July is actually the first of April — it's April Fools' [Day]," he told reporters Sunday at a press conference.

Adding to the extraordinary circumstances, the New York Times' Tyler Pager and Tariq Panja reported that U.S. President Donald Trump called FIFA president Gianni Infantino directly about Balogun's red card. Crafton and colleague Dan Sheldon detailed more of the machinations behind the scenes, which included other members of the Trump administration.

Balogun has been the United States' best attacker in the World Cup. The AS Monaco forward had a brace in the USMNT's opening victory over Paraguay and then scored in the round of 32.

If his suspension is ultimately upheld on appeal, he'd be a big absence for the squad.
