Arsenal vs. Coventry City Live Premier League Matchweek 1 Updates, Scores and Highlights

Amid a backdrop of "Championes" chants at the Emirates Stadium, Premier League title holders Arsenal got the 2026-27 season underway with a confident, straightforward win against newly promoted Coventry City.

Kai Havertz got the opening goal of the campaign, coolly guiding home Riccardo Calafiori's pass to give the Gunners a deserved lead in the 15th minute. 

Bukayo Saka got in on the fun 10 minutes later, tapping home from yards out with the goal at his mercy following good work from Declan Rice and Christos Tzolis. 

The champions went into the half with a comfortable 2-0 lead, holding 67% possession and restricting the Sky Blues to just two shots, neither of which was on target.

In an early contender for the weirdest goal of the season, Martin Ødegaard made it three just minutes after the restart. The Norwegian completely scuffed his kick when Ben White's pass met him outside the six-yard box, but the ball bobbled awkwardly towards Carl Rushworth's goal, and there was little the keeper could do to keep it out. 

With the game all but won, the Gunners took their foot off the gas for the remainder of the second half, but they remained far superior to a Coventry side that will need a lot more to survive another season in the Premier League. 

It was a baptism of fire for Coventry in their first Premier League game for 25 years, but with fellow promoted club Hull City up next, they have a real chance to grab what could already be a vital three points.

Arsenal, meanwhile, will look to keep up the momentum on the road against Aston Villa. With an effortless 3-0 win, the Gunners have already put the league on notice.

Odegaard will take it

In a one-sided first half, Premier League champions Arsenal haven't been kind to Coventry City in their long-awaited return to the top flight. 

The Gunners' early pressure told in the 15th minute, with Riccardo Calafiori pulling off a neat turn on the edge of the box before playing the ball across to Kai Havertz. The German calmly swept home, with goalkeeper Carl Rushworth given no chance.

It didn't take long for the North Londoners to double their lead. In the 23rd minute, Declan Rice plowed through the middle of the park, played a one-two with Martin Ødegaard, then found Christos Tzolis with acres of space on the left. Rushworth palmed the Greek's cross into the path of Bukayo Saka, who easily converted his first of the season.

With the clock ticking down to halftime, Loum Tchaouna made David Raya sweat for a moment as his scooped effort over his head threatened to creep under the Spaniard's crossbar, but it wasn't to be. 

Lots of work for Coventry to do in the second half, but it looks like it will be an easy three points for Arsenal.
