EA Sports College Football 27 Review, Gameplay Impressions, Videos, Top Modes and Features

College Football 27 from EA Sports is that lovable annual contending program that onlookers haven't soured on yet because the stay at the top is so prolonged. 

Luckily for one of the best annual sports series out there, smart, layered improvements and careful attention to fan feedback could prevent that from ever happening. 

Previously on hiatus since 2013, the series has enjoyed two fantastic releases. Last year's effort showed serious growth while shedding some annual sports title stereotypes, throwing out upgrades that Madden and other sports games would need to mimic to keep pace. 

Now, it's about going for a three-peat, with the game needing to match the super-fast evolutions of the college football world while pushing the boundaries of its genre in the video game space, too. 

Gameplay

EA Sports College Football just keeps expanding the gameplay experience in meaningful ways. 

Sounds generic, yet true. Last year, things like quarterback vision mattering and defenders not picking off passes they aren't looking at really helped. So did obviously better, realistic assignments for offensive linemen. 

There's more of the same this year: Basic, yet profound. 

Take the revamped pre-snap process. On defense, players can now input a custom adjustment based on what they're seeing from an opponent. Rather than mash buttons to get individual players doing certain things, players can, for example, simply push a "no short routes" button and the defense will shift to a pre-made adjustment. 

We're talking micro stuff, too, like assigning out a chip block attempt for an offensive weapon. It's a deep level of control on macro and micro levels that is fun to explore and will add a serious level of depth to the high end of competitive matches, too. 

Overall AI logic seems better, too, especially when it comes to short-yardage work and how ball-carriers navigate traffic. There's simply more going on, too: Players don't just finish a route at the sideline anymore and stand around like it's a video game, they actively seek out other things to do. 

This game is, in a word, much harder, too. Players have to seek it out. But Heisman difficulty can be brutal. The days of breezing through a massive upset against a much bigger program are over. That's a good thing: The upsets feel earned. 

It should go without saying, but overall, the faster-than-Madden, yet also realistic approach just feels great once again. But it's great to see so many little upgrades baked into the experience on the gameplay front. 

Impressively, the game recognizes that even veteran players will have to re-learn the pre-snap stuff, so the Skills Trainer that used to be tucked into other game modes is now front and center on the main menu. Good thing, too: It's one of the best tutorial-like systems in all of sporting games. 

Graphics and Presentation

The king of sports game atmosphere isn't about to relinquish the crown anytime soon. 

Arguably the biggest expectation of all when the series made its long-requested return was the absolute nailing of everything around college game day. 

EA Sports College Football has crushed it so far, and this year, continues to bring in more cutscenes, crowd interactions and little unique traditions for a variety of programs. 

Lots of little new details pepper the experience, too, especially on the field. There are more attire pieces than ever before. Think, hanging mouthguards. More unique features, too, like varying sizes of shoulder pads. 

There's some standard next-generation video game stuff going on, too. Seems like a little thing, but new dynamic weather systems means a more realistic-feeling hour-to-hour progression of the world around the game. 

Chants, reactions and otherwise from varying unique crowds deepen the experience and can make those road games brutal. And speaking of immersive sound design, the announcers are once again a strength, too, especially when adding Joel Klatt and Holly Rowe to the mix. 

Beyond just looking like a stellar, lifelike game most of the time, there's also pretty standard-yet-helpful stat overlays and getting through the new pre-snap stuff is simple enough, once one memorizes the new button prompts. 

Dynasty, Road to Glory and More

Dynasty remains king for the series. And it's almost funny sometimes to think that a sports game has so many millions engaging with what is becoming rather deep RPG systems on an annual basis. 

That's a great thing. The way dynasty has evolved over the years to loop in modern RPG staples was a much-needed development. Taking a program and diving into the extensive behind-the-scenes management before ever really stepping on the field is super immersive and engrossing. 

A year removed from transfer portal tweaks and big upgrades to recruiting mechanics, this year's game also adds further NIL to the mix, tasking players with earning points to put into the transfer portal. 

Adding to last year's refreshing RPG feel, too, are soft commits and even flipping recruits all the way up to signing day. 

Dynasty also adds a coaching carousel to the experience. It's a fun way to throw oneself into a "free agency" of sorts and find the best possible program. 

There is…a lot going on here. In a good way. Difficult isn't the right word. Dense, perhaps? The accurate reproduction of things like NIL means even more things to manage. And those who overlook it or don't fully understand might find half of their roster leaving through transfer and graduation after one season, digging an even deeper rebuilding hole. 

Road to Glory is a mode that keeps getting deeper by the year. Players can customize high schools, then import even rivals. Edge rusher, safety and tight end are the three new positions added to the mix, too. 

Tight end is a highlight. Chip blocks and overall blocking assignments have been an emphasis of the gameplay this year and, indeed, pancaking a defensive back into next week before going down the field to make a highlight catch is pretty fun. 

College Ultimate Team expands on the card-collecting fun with a new progression system that lets players upgrade via archetypes. Simply put, players can lean into certain playstyles and really drive home what direction they want to go. 

Granted, things like ability and chemistry slots matter plenty, too. And last year's focus on real-time events will keep things fresh. Also promising is the post-launch promise to add "Evos" to push upgrades past ceiling caps (think "ascension" or "prestiging" in other games). To say that will give those who love the mode something to do until the '28 edition is an understatement. 

Other expected modes, like Mascot Mashup, Road to College Football Playoff and the usual online suite make appearances. So, too, does a deep list of options, accessibility tweaks and deeply customizable sliders atop a game that runs really well on the technical front. 

Conclusion

EA Sports' College Football juggernaut isn't out of steam just yet. 

By now, it's enough to start wondering why other sports titles don't bake in as many noticeable upgrades on a yearly basis. That's especially the case when this college football effort needs to loop in so many distinct things from a staggering number of programs across the country, never mind the ever-changing landscape of the sport thanks to things like NIL. 

Alas, the gameplay upgrades and deepening dearth of adjustment options make the on-field experience shine brighter. Dynasty and its engrossing RPG-like approach to managing a program remains arguably the top highlight in sporting games as a whole. 

There might be a time when EA's College Football suffers from stagnant annual-release problems. But three banger releases in a row since the hyped return have culminated in the best entry in the series to date and what is surely going to be the top sports game of the entire calendar year.
