120 minutes weren't enough to decide the winner of Friday's opening match, as Egypt ultimately emerged victorious in penalties.
Australia had an early opportunity to jump in front once the battle started, as a quick strike from Cristian Volpato went off the top of the crossbar.
Egypt eventually got on the board first, with Karim Hafez's cross resulting in a header for Emam Ashour in the 13th minute.
While Australia started off strong, the team struggled to create more scoring chances throughout the rest of the first half.
Egypt threatened to take a 2-0 lead as soon as the second half commenced, as a short shot from Omar Marmoush was just wide after he briefly broke free.
Australia's equalizer came in the 55th minute after Aiden O'Neill's free kick went off Mohamed Hany's head for an own goal.
Egypt was on the verge of ending the game before extra time, but a glancing header from Ramy Rabia was saved by Australian goalkeeper Patrick Beach.
Egypt star Mohamed Salah gave his team plenty of energy in extra time, although the score still remained tied 1-1 and both squads entered a penalty shootout.
Australia missed two of its first four penalties before Hossam Abdelmaguid sealed the win for Egypt.
It represented the Egyptian squad's first World Cup knockout round victory.
