Cade Cavalli, Willson Contreras Among Players Suspended by MLB for Nationals-Red Sox Fight on Video
There was significant fallout from Tuesday's benches-clearing tussle during the game between the Boston Red Sox and Washington Nationals.
USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported Thursday that Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras and Nationals pitcher Cade Cavalli were each suspended seven games. What's more, Washington pitcher Miles Mikolas was suspended five games, while Red Sox outfielder Nate Eaton was suspended three games.
The incident started when Cavalli said something to Contreras after striking him out, which prompted a reaction from the slugger that included throwing his helmet:ย
Contreras, Red Sox manager Chad Tracy and Eaton were all ejected for Boston, while Mikolas was ejected for Washington.
Despite the lengthy suspension, Cavalli was not ejected and remained in the game.
It was the second ejection in two days for Contreras, who was thrown out of Monday's game for tapping his helmet on the way back to the dugout when he was called out on a failed check swing for strike three:
Yet the incident from Tuesday's game generated far more attention.
Both players responded to the situation with Cavalli saying he didn't have any ill intention when he yelled at Contreras following the strikeout:
Washington ended up winning Tuesday's contest 8-1 and took two of three in the series. Next up for the Nationals is a three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, while the Red Sox hit the road to face the Los Angeles Angels in a three-game set.
The suspensions are likely more meaningful in the playoff picture on the Nationals' side.
After all, they are 1.5 games back of the final wild-card spot in the National League, while the Red Sox are in last place in the American League East and six games out of the final wild-card spot in the American League.
The only teams in the AL with worse records than Boston are the Angels and Kansas City Royals.
