Wednesday's Recaps
England 2, DR Congo 1
Harry Kane's second-half brace guided England to a 2-1 win over DR Congo, who authored an incredible upset attempt in Atlanta.
DR Congo grabbed a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute after Brian Cipenga found himself all alone after a great cross from Chancel Mbemba. He snuck the ball between England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and the left goalpost for the early 1-0 lead.
England maintained incredible pressure on DR Congo in the first half in search of its first goal, but DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi became a brick wall on two shots from Jude Bellingham and one on Kane. He also got a little help from Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
There was some first half drama outside of Mpasi's play.
First, Yoane Wissa nearly gave DR Congo a 2-0 lead but hit the post.
Shortly thereafter, Kane went down in the box, but no penalty was called. VAR review confirmed the no-call.
In the end, DR Congo took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the beginning of the second half, Mpasi maintained his brilliance, denying Bellingham a third time.
However, Kane leveled the score at one after England's pressure finally resulted in a goal in the 75th minute. Anthony Gordon chipped the ball toward Kane, who headed it in for the equalizer.
The Gordon-Kane combination came through again in the 86th minute. Gordon found Kane, who authored a tremendous goal in the face of multiple DR Congo defenders and fired a shot in the upper-right hand corner of the net.
DR Congo had one more chance in the closing seconds of stoppage time when Bellingham fouled Wissa just outside the box. However, Wissa's attempt at goal went over the crossbar.
Credit to England, of course, for the dramatic comeback, but DR Congo deserves its flowers as well for a fantastic effort against heavy favorites.
England will now face World Cup tri-host Mexico at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET.
