Watch Cristiano Ronaldo Make History with 1st Goal for Portugal at 2026 World Cup
It didn't take long for Cristiano Ronaldo to find the back of the net in Portugal's 5-0 win over Uzbekistan on Tuesday, and he officially made FIFA World Cup history in the process.
Ronaldo's goal in the sixth minute of Tuesday's match made him the first player ever to score in six different World Cups.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Ronaldo shut down a question about Lionel Messi, who owns the early lead in the Golden Boot race with five goals across two group stage games:
Ronaldo faced some criticism for a lackluster performance in his 2026 World Cup debut, as he went scoreless in a 1-1 draw against DR Congo. The 41-year-old played the full 90 minutes in that match, leading many to wonder if he can still keep up physically. Portugal defender Rúben Dias supported his teammate and declared that the team wouldn't be affected by any criticism.
"For all of us, it's not an issue," Dias said last week. "We're all united in the realization that difficulties are a good thing and that it's through difficulties that we'll see what we're made of. We embrace it as an opportunity to create something positive. My mind doesn't wander in that direction. I don't pay attention when it's thrown at us. I believe none of us attach any importance to it. It shouldn't even be an issue."
It took just over five minutes for Ronaldo to silence his doubters on Tuesday, as he fired a one-timer past Uzbekistan goalie Abduvohid Nematov off a low cross from teammate João Cancelo. His second goal of the match came off a beautiful through ball from Bruno Fernandes.
Ronaldo will try to stay hot as he looks to lead Portugal to the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup.
