World Cup 2026 Group Standings, Schedule After Sunday's Results Ahead of Knockout Bracket
Three countries have already qualified for the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup, but Tunisia sealed its fate in a different way as Sunday's action kicked into gear.
The Tunisians were the recipients of a 4-0 hammering at the hands of Japan, ensuring they won't make it out of the group.
Four matches from Groups G and H are still to come, and everything is up for grabs. After draws from the first round of fixtures, the four countries in each group are all tied with one point apiece.

Sunday Highlights
Japan 4, Tunisia 0
Tunisia once again dug itself into an early hole and couldn't climb out.
Losing 5-1 to Sweden resulted in the dismissal of coach Sabri Lamouchi, and the arrival of Hervé Renard did little to improve the squad's fortunes. Crystal Palace midfielder Daichi Kamada put Japan ahead in the fourth minute.
Japan nearly doubled its lead minutes later. Tunisian goalkeeper Aymen Dahmen made a quick reaction save at his near post, and the ball was inches from clearing the goal line.
That was only a momentary reprieve as Feyenoord attacker Ayase Ueda definitively made it 2-0 in the 31st minute. He fired a low shot into the far post from the edge of the 18-yard box.
Midfielder Junya Itō scored Japan's third in the 69th minute before Ueda completed a brace in the 83rd.
Tunisia failed to generate a single shot on target and had just two efforts overall. Renard was undoubtedly put in a tough spot, but Tunisia's failure to both defend and create any scoring opportunities was a surprise.
With nothing else to play for, the finale against the Netherlands may at least help determine whether Renard sticks around past the tournament. Another lackluster showing could have the national team continue the revolving door on the touchline.
Spain 4, Saudi Arabia 0
Spain's 0-0 draw with Cabo Verde was one of the biggest surprises early into the 2026 World Cup. Vozinha became an overnight celebrity after maintaining a clean sheet against the reigning European champion.
There were no such shocks for La Roja on Sunday.
Barcelona star Lamine Yamal got the country on the board early with a 10th-minute goal. It was the first of what could be many for the 18-year-old in the World Cup.
Then, Mikel Oyarzabal notched a brace in the space of three minutes. He doubled Spain's lead in the 21st minute and got another in the 24th.
Spain spent the rest of the match pretty much coasting. Coach Luis de la Fuente subbed off Yamal and Oyarzabal signaling his focus was on the rest of the tournament rather than padding his team's goal differential.
The favorite in Group H completed 639 passes to 299 for Saudi Arabia and limited the Saudis to one shot on target. Anybody who tuned in after the goals from Yamal and Oyarzabal was treated to a rather boring spectacle.
It was exactly the kind of performance Spain needed after such a lackluster opener.
Belgium 0, Iran 0
A draw against Belgium is a win for Iran, as it will still have the chance to advance out of the group stage for the first time.
Belgium star Romelu Lukaku got off to a tough start when he was given a yellow card just three minutes into the game. He was off his rhythm for the rest of the first half.
Belgium tried to put the pressure on early, but Iran goalie Alireza Beiranvand notched four saves in the first half to keep things quiet.
Belgium goalie Thibaut Courtois turned away a solid attempt by Iran's Hossein Kanani in the 14th minute.
However, Iran appeared to finally break through when it was awarded a free kick in the 25th minute. Iran captain Ehsan Hajsafi found Mehdi Taremi for a brilliant shot that got past Courtois. However, VAR determined that Taremi was offside, keeping the game scoreless.
Belgium kept the pressure on again to start the second half. Maxim De Cuyper had a golden opportunity in front of the net, but Beiranvand hit the grass for an incredible save.
Belgium's Nathan Ngoy was assessed a red card for dragging down Taremi from behind, putting his team at a one-man disadvantage for the rest of the match.
Things completely flipped from that point on, with Iran dominating the possession while Belgium played in a defensive shell. However, Iran still couldn't figure out how to attack.
Belgium managed to get another shot on goal, but Beiranvand stopped De Cuyper once again.
Iran will close out the group stage against Egypt on Friday, while Belgium will take on New Zealand that day as well.
Uruguay 2, Cabo Verde 2
There's been a lot of great goalkeeping performances at this year's World Cup. Sunday's matchup against Uruguay and Cabo Verde perhaps didn't fall into that category.
The two countries finished in a 2-2 draw that was certainly fun, though perhaps a touch on the sloppy side on the defensive end.
Kevin Pina gave the underdogs an early lead in the 21st minute, but Uruguay's Maxi Araújo answered back in the 44th.
The Uruguayans than took the lead in first-half stoppage time on an Agustín Cano tally, but Hélio Varela had the answer for Cape Verde on what was a moment of true goalkeeping malpractice from Fernando Muslera.
On paper, Uruguay dominated this match, with the advantage in possession (65 percent), xG (2.34-0.86), shots (17-12) and corners won (11-4). But Uruguay only had two shots on goal, and Cabo Verde took their chances.
That leaves both teams in interesting position heading into the final matchday of the group stage, with both a berth in the knockout round and elimination still possibilities. It's all up for grabs in Group H.
Egypt 3, New Zealand 1
Egypt needed a second-half comeback against New Zealand but the dam eventually broke, as the Egyptians claimed their first-ever victory at the World Cup.
Finn Surman opened the scoring for New Zealand in the 15th minute and the All Whites proved to be resolute for nearly an hour in game time.
But Mostafa Zico equalized in the 58th minute, Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah put Egypt ahead in the 67th minute and Trézéguet sealed the victory in the 82nd, finishing off a legendary night for the African nation.
While Egypt haven't clinched their group, they are in excellent position to do so and are a near lock to reach the knockout phase.
