Latest Rumors on Doug Gottlieb's New Contract Extension with Green Bay Ahead 2026 CBB Season

Adam WellsJun 19, 2026

After leading Green Bay to a 14-win improvement last season, Doug Gottlieb has been rewarded with a contract extension.

Per CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein, the Phoenix have given Gottlieb a new deal that runs through the 2030-31 season.

Originally hired by Green Bay in May 2024, Gottlieb was an out-of-the-box choice because his only previous experience as a head coach was with Team USA at the 2017 Maccabiah Games.

Gottlieb had been a radio and television analyst since 2002. He was perhaps best known for his tenure at ESPN from 2003 to 2012 before going on to work at CBS Sports and Fox Sports.

It didn't seem like Gottlieb's tenure would last long after the Phoenix lost 21 straight games at one point during the 2024-25 season en route to finish 4-28 overall. The .125 winning percentage was the second-worst in program history.

Gottlieb also had some public blunders throughout the season, notably drawing a comment on social media from LeBron James after Gottlieb previously criticized Bronny James' basketball talent.

After one year of learning on the job, Gottlieb looked much more comfortable in his second season. The 50-year-old led Green Bay to an 18-15 record in 2025-26.

It marked the second winning record for the program in the past six seasons. The 18 wins were tied for their most since the 2019-20 campaign.

If Gottlieb coaches the Phoenix through the end of this new deal, he will join Dick Bennett, Mike Heideman and Tod Kowalczyk as their only head coaches to remain with the program for at least seven seasons.
