England Opens World Cup with a Bang
In one of the most anticipated Group Stage matchups, England beat Croatia 4-2 in one of the more exciting ties thus far.
The English were led by Harry Kane's brace and fantastic goals from Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford.
Croatia twice erased a one-goal deficit, as both Martin Baturina and Petar Musa found the back of the net in the first half
England's firepower was simply too much for Croatia to overcome, however. How many teams could bring players like Rashford, Bukayo Saka and Morgan Rogers off the bench?
The Three Lions will now be heavy favorites to win Group L, and certainly made a strong opening statement in their bid to end their 60-year World Cup title drought.
Congo Earns Its First-Ever World Cup Point
Congo DR, making its World Cup debut on Wednesday, earned a shocking 1-1 draw against Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal.
It looked as though Portugal might cruise to an easy and dominant win just six minutes into the game after Joรฃo Neves opened the scoring.
But Congo was resolute from there, and Yoane Wissa leveled the scoring with a header in first-half stoppage time.
Despite Portugal's 75 percent possession, it was actually Congo with the superior xG (0.82 to 0.64) and more shots (8-7, 2-1 on goal). For Portugal, it was about as poor a start to this World Cup as possible, even if a point was better than nothing.
For Congo, it was a day the country will not soon forget.
Ghana Wins Defensive Battle Against Panama
Wednesday's contest nearly ended in a scoreless draw, but a clutch goal from Ghana in added time saved the day.
Both keepers did their part in the defensive battle, as there were a handful of shots that would have gone in if it weren't for tremendous saves.
There was also plenty of physicality in Wednesday's contest, a major contributor to the lack of offense.
Just as it looked like things would end without a goal, Caleb Yirenkyi scored from close range in the fifth minute of added time after Brandon Thomas-Asante beat the defense and found him on the cross.
Panama got close to answering, but ultimately dropped its opening match.
Both teams will be back in action on Tuesday, with Ghana taking on England and Panama facing Croatia.
Colombia Spoils Uzbekistan's World Cup Debut
Uzbekistan put together a strong effort in their first-ever World Cup game, but Colombia ultimately had just a bit more.
After a slow start offensively for both teams, Colombia opened up scoring late in the first half with a goal from Daniel Muรฑoz in the 40th minute.
Uzbekistan came out attacking in the second half and finally found the back of the net when Abbosbek Fayzullaev knocked in a header off a deflection. It marked Uzbekistan's first World Cup goal ever.
But Uzbekistan could only celebrate momentarily, as Colombia responded five minutes later with a goal from Luis Dรญaz.
Uzbekistan had a few more chances later in the game, including a shot on goal in added time, but it ultimately couldn't find the equalizer. A late goal from Colombia's Jaminton Campaz sealed the deal.
Colombia will face DR Congo on Tuesday, while Uzbekistan will take on a Portugal squad that had a rough start to the World Cup with a draw on Wednesday.
