AJ Dybantsa '100%' Sure He'll Be Wizards' Pick at No. 1 in 2026 NBA Draft amid Rumors
BYU forward AJ Dybantsa strongly believes the Washington Wizards will make him the No. 1 overall pick in this month's draft.
Speaking to Ari Alexander of 7News, Dybantsa made it clear he expects to land in the nation's capital.
"Like, the max you can get," Dybantsa said when asked how sure he was that Washington would choose him. Alexander then asked if he was 100 percent sure, and Dybantsa said he was.
Alexander also asked Dybantsa what he did at BYU that made him feel like he was set to go first overall.
"Just my versatility," Dybantsa said. "I'm pretty much doing everything on the court at a high level. Shooting at a high level. Defending at a pretty high level. I just think a lot of teams wouldn't pass up on it."
The 6'9", 210-pound Dybantsa averaged a Division I-high 25.5 points per game on 51.0 percent shooting in his lone season at BYU. He also added 6.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.1 steals per game.
Dybantsa also played all 35 of BYU's games and averaged 34.8 minutes per outing. For his efforts, he was named a first team consensus All-American.
Jonathan Wasserman's latest mock draft for Bleacher Report compares Dybantsa to Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown and has him off the board at No. 1.
"The Washington Wizards may see AJ Dybantsa as the can't-lose option with the fewest holes, while some remain turned off by Darryn Peterson's bizarre season and worry about Cameron Boozer's athletic/defensive limitations," Wasserman wrote.
"The Wizards will presumably listen to trade calls, particularly if they prefer Peterson or Boozer and know a rival team wants Dybantsa.
"As it stands, though, Dybantsa's positional size, advanced footwork for creation, high-level shotmaking, 25.5 points per game and competitiveness suggest he may be too rare of a scoring prospect to pass on.
"With the front office invested in the development of Tre Johnson and Alex Sarr, who'll play alongside Anthony Davis, room for a small forward to start and grow could give Dybantsa bonus fit-points in Washington."
Kansas guard Darryn Peterson and Duke forward Cameron Boozer are seemingly the two other candidates to go first overall, but at this juncture, Dybantsa looks like he has the edge on both to get his name called first when the draft begins on Tuesday, June 23.
