New Giannis Rumors Reveal Why Cavs Execs 'Vehemently' Against Evan Mobley Trade
The Cleveland Cavaliers' internal confidence in young forward Evan Mobley will be a significant hurdle toward any pursuit of Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, according to Cleveland.com's Chris Fedor.
Fedor reported Monday the Cavs "believe in him and there are multiple members of the Cleveland brain trust that would be vehemently against a Giannis-Mobley swap."
The organization considers the 24-year-old to be "not only a future star but also a proverbial safety net when it comes to another rebuild."

NBA insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer effectively reported the same thing on May 29 while downplaying Cleveland as a candidate in the Giannis sweepstakes.
"Another obstacle for the Bucks: Mobley, at 24, is regarded in Cleveland as the sort of player who could offer a legitimate bridge to a successful post-[Donovan] Mitchell future," they wrote. "The Cavaliers, remembering how hard life was after [LeBron] James walked away from the franchise — twice — are obviously reluctant to surrender Mobley and the staying power he is projected to represent unless it's a sure-thing trade."
Mobley hasn't evolved enough offensively to totally live up to the Kevin Garnett comps, but he's an elite defender who has averaged 16.7 points and 9.0 rebounds while shooting 54.7 percent overall through five seasons.
Whether or not he becomes a top-10 star in the NBA, he's somebody a franchise can anchor its future around.
Mobley is under contract through 2030 as well, and that kind of team control is invaluable to the Cavs.
The NBA's new draft lottery reforms could be further influencing their front office's approach since the worst teams in the league will actually be at a slight disadvantage moving forward.
Cleveland won 22 games or fewer across three straight seasons from 2018-21. All of the losing did at least yield three top-five picks, with Mobley and Darius Garland two of those selections.
In a scenario where Mitchell walks as a free agent in 2027 and the Cavaliers have to rebuild, they couldn't follow the same blueprint. Having Mobley as the long-term fulcrum would at least give them a starting point.
Should Antetokounmpo signal to Cleveland's front office he's willing to sign an extension, trading away Mobley becomes a different prospect. Absent that, the cost is too high for the team to seriously target the two-time MVP.
