NBA Exec Reveals Building Roster to Stop Wemby's Spurs Is 'On Everybody's Mind'
As fans continue to marvel at what San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama is accomplishing in his first playoff run, the rest of the NBA is in a panic trying to figure out how to slow him down going forward.
As one Eastern Conference executive explained to The Athletic's Sam Amick, one thing "on everybody's mind" throughout the league is trying to build a roster that can stop Wembanyama and the Spurs:
"Teams will definitely have to start figuring out, 'How do we get through this guy?' So you look at it, and it's like, 'What do we need? How do we build our team to get better to compete against (Wembanyama and the Spurs)?' Trust me, it's on everybody's mind. Teams will try to find ways that they can build a roster out to beat the Spurs, just like they are to beat OKC."

Times are especially tough for Western Conference teams. As the executive pointed out, they were already mired in a situation trying to figure out how to compete with a loaded Oklahoma City Thunder team that doesn't seem likely to go anywhere for many years.
Now, Wembanyama and the Spurs have arrived sooner than anyone was anticipating. Their preseason over/under was 44.5 wins, then they proceeded to go 62-20 in the regular season.
Wembanyama, who just turned 22 in January, already has an argument as the best player in the NBA. He won his first Defensive Player of the Year award this season and finished third in MVP voting.
In his first exposure to the playoffs, Wembanyama is averaging 22.1 points on 53.8 percent shooting (36.0 percent from three), 12.3 rebounds and 4.0 blocks per game in 12 starts so far.
On top of having Wembanyama, the Spurs have done a phenomenal job adding talent around him. All of their major moves, particularly trading for De'Aaron Fox and drafting Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper, look like they are going to pay off handsomely.
You never want to say that anything in sports is impossible, but the non-Spurs teams are facing a steep uphill climb as they look to keep up with a franchise whose stock is through the roof regardless of how this Western Conference Finals series against the Thunder plays out.
