New 76ers Rumors on Jameer Nelson, Top Candidates to Replace Daryl Morey in Bob Myers' Latest Search
As Bob Myers continues to lead the Philadelphia 76ers' search for a new president of basketball operations, several candidates have emerged as potential replacements for Daryl Morey.
Per The Athletic's Tony Jones, Jameer Nelson is viewed as the "strongest internal candidate" after being promoted to assistant general manager by the Sixers in May 2025.
Jones noted Nelson was technically the No. 3 in Philadelphia's front office this season, behind Morey and Elton Brand, but he "handled more responsibility" than normal for someone in that position.

"Internally, respect is high for Nelson's abilities. He is seen as a rising star in the front office world and someone who will eventually be given the opportunity to run a team, even if he doesn't get the present opening," Jones wrote.
Cleveland Cavaliers general manager Mike Gansey is viewed as a "strong candidate" among the external options. Other outside candidates expected to at least interview with Myers include Matt Lloyd of the Minnesota Timberwolves, Nick U'Ren of the Phoenix Mercury and Trent Redden of the Los Angeles Clippers.
Myers, who is best known for his 12-year stint as general manager of the Golden State Warriors from 2011 to '23, wasย put in chargeย of running Philadelphia's search for a new lead executive by the Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment group that owns the franchise.
HBSE named Myers as its president in October 2025.
Nelson began his executive career with the Sixers' G League affiliate in Delaware when he was hired as assistant general manager in November 2020. He has close ties to the Philadelphia area, having been born in Chester and playing college basketball at Saint Joseph's.
Ganseyย has been the No. 2 in Cleveland under Koby Altman since the 2017-18 season. He was promoted to general manager in 2022, with Altman holding the title of president of basketball operations.
Lloyd has worked with the Timberwolves since June 2022 and was promoted to general manager in 2024. Tim Connelly is the No. 1 executive in Minnesota and is under contract through 2026-27 afterย opting inย to the final two years of his deal last summer.
Redden has been with the Clippers since the 2017-18 season after previously working as assistant general manager for the Cavs. U'Ren worked with Myers in Golden State from 2014 to '23 before taking his current role as general manager of the Mercury in July 2023.
On May 12, two days after their season ended with a playoff sweep against the New York Knicks, the 76ersย announcedย a mutual parting of ways with Morey.
Morey had been the lead executive in Philadelphia for six seasons after being hired in November 2020. His tenure did produce five playoff appearances, in addition to drafting Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe.
Despite the general level of success, the Sixers remain in search of their first Eastern Conference Finals appearance since the 2000-01 season.
The biggest test out of the gate for whomever the Sixers hire will be figuring out a plan for Joel Embiid and Paul George. They are still productive when they are healthy enough to play, but that has been very infrequent.
It doesn't help that Embiid and George will account forย $112 millionย in combined salary next season. George has a $56.6 million player option for 2026-27. Embiid has two more guaranteed years on his deal, plus a $67.3 million player option for 2027-28.
The most enticing part of the Sixers' job is being able to build around the backcourt duo of Maxey and Edgecombe.
