Daryl Morey, 76ers Part Ways After Knicks Sweep in NBA Playoffs, Nick Nurse Reportedly to Remain HC

The Philadelphia 76ers parted ways with president of basketball operations Daryl Morey on Tuesday, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.

Philadelphia confirmed Morey's departure in a post on X. As for head coach Nick Nurse, he's expected to remain in his role, per Charania.

Charania also noted that Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment president of sports Bob Myers will lead the search for Philadelphia's new head executive and oversee the organization's basketball department in the meantime. Myers previously served as the Golden State Warriors' lead executive.

The 76ers were swept by the New York Knicks in a second-round playoff series that wrapped up on Sunday.

The elimination came after Philadelphia defeated the Boston Celtics during the first round of the playoffs, coming back from a 3-1 series deficit for the first time in franchise history.

Morey was initially hired as Philadelphia's president of basketball operations in Nov. 2020 and received a contract extension through the 2027-28 season in Dec. 2023.

The 76ers went 270-212 throughout his tenure with the organization, making five playoff appearances. They never advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals over that span, though.

Morey made multiple blockbuster moves during his time in Philadelphia, trading for James Harden in Feb. 2022 before ultimately sending him to the Los Angeles Clippers in an Oct. 2023 swap.

The 76ers later signed Paul George to a four-year contract worth $212 million during the 2024 offseason. George is averaging 16.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game on 43.4/37.5/81.7 shooting splits since joining the team.

Philadelphia has found success in the draft with VJ Edgecombe and Jared McCain being selected in recent years, although the latter was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for a 2026 first-round pick and three second-round selections on Feb. 4.

While it's worth noting that McCain was struggling to open the 2025-26 season after a promising rookie year, star center Joel Embiid was reportedly among several 76ers players that weren't happy with the trade.

As Philadelphia looks to add more depth pieces and go on a deeper playoff run next year, Morey is no longer in the fold.
