Charles Woodson Jr. Commits to Michigan, Son of Legendary Wolverines Heisman Trophy Winner
The Michigan football team is keeping it in the family with one of its greatest players in program history.
Per Hayes Fawcett of On3.com, the Wolverines scored a commitment from class of 2027 safety Charles Woodson Jr., the son of Michigan legend and 1997 Heisman Trophy winner Charles Woodson.
The younger Woodson stars for Lake Nona High School in Orlando and is rated as a 3-star prospect in 247Sports' composite. He earned a selection to the Navy All-American Bowl in January as a junior. 247Sports director of scouting Andrew Ivins described him as a "smart safety with best-in-class type of bloodlines that made noticeable strides between sophomore and junior campaigns."
"Should be viewed as a potential starter at the Power Four level based on what he put on tape as an 11th grader," Ivins added. "Must add some mass in coming years, but the ability to process on the backend is encouraging."
Woodson finished his junior season with 73 total tackles, eight passes defended, two interceptions, one of which was a pick-six, and a fumble recovery. He also scored on a kickoff return touchdown.
"I think they have a genuine interest in Junior, not because of dad," Lake Nona head coach David Aubrey told Steve Wiltfong of On3.com. "I think that's going to be the storyline, dad-son, but they have a genuine interest in Charles and they showed that. The whole staff came down to see him in January. I never experienced that in coaching. Literally, the whole staff came down. Pretty cool opportunity for him. Obviously, he's going to have big shoes to fill because the narrative will always be how well does he matchup compared to what his dad did. But I think he's up for the challenge. He's always been poised. And what's really cool, his dad has never shown that he's strongly influenced him to attend Michigan. He allowed him to choose his own path and that's really cool."
