Analyzing NBA Trade Rumors, Free-Agency Buzz Amid Draft Combine, 2026 Playoffs

Erik BeastonMay 15, 2026

The NBA rumor mill is buzzing, with reports on free agents, trades, and the draft combine dominating the conversation.

From a top-five team potentially interested in moving up to select AJ Dybantsa to another team's plans for their pick amid interest in Giannis Antetokounmpo, these are a few insider reports to keep an eye on ahead of one of the busiest stretches of the NBA calendar.

Jazz Eyeing AJ Dybantsa

2026 NBA Draft Combine

The Utah Jazz hoped they would secure the No. 1 overall pick in this year's NBA Draft, with a chance to select BYU's AJ Dybantsa. They did not, with that opportunity instead going to the Washington Wizards.

That does not mean that the Jazz called off their pursuit.

Marc J. Spears reported, "Dybantsa is the top prospect in the draft, according to ESPN's Jeremy Woo. The Jazz have reached out to the Washington Wizards, who have the No. 1 pick, about potentially trading up to land the former BYU standout, a source said."

The freshman forward had a breakout first season with the Cougars, averaging 25.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.1 steals. He shot 51 percent from the paint and 33.1 percent from beyond the arc while leading BYU to a March Madness berth.

A big, strong playmaker and shot-taker who, on tape, looks a lot like Tracy McGrady, it is no wonder that Dybantsa is the apple of the Jazz's eye. The question is whether the team has the assets available, or is willing to disrupt the young core it has built, to make the jump to the top spot and select the Boston export.

Even if they choose not to, Utah could end up with an equally talented, perhaps even better, pick at the No. 2 spot, where Darryn Peterson, Cameron Boozer, and Caleb Wilson should be available to them.

Latest on Warriors and Giannis

Milwaukee Bucks v Philadelphia 76ers

Spears, in an appearance on ESPN, reported that although the team could utilize it to explore a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade, the Golden State Warriors would like to keep the 11th overall pick.

ESPN's Shams Charania previously reported that the organization was among the teams to check in on Giannis' status with the Bucks.

It is not surprising that the team would, either. Antetokounmpo, when healthy, is still a dominant star in the NBA. In just 36 games this past season, the big man out of Athens averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, 5.4 assists, and shot 62.4 percent from the floor.

He is still very much a game-changer but the Warriors are an aging team that needs to look beyond the final years of Steph Curry and Draymond Green. Focusing on the draft and selecting a player who can be a foundational piece for the next decade is the best utilization of that No. 11 pick.

Yes, the team has first-round picks it could still flip to get Antetokounmpo if they please, but mortgaging the future for a player that is great, but whose long-term future is unknown, would be an organizational misstep that would put the Warriors in an unenviable position beyond Curry and Green hanging up their sneakers.

Philly's Unsuccessful Trades

Detroit Pistons v Philadelphia 76ers

The Philadelphia 76ers relieved Daryl Morey of his duties as general manager this week following a 4-0 series sweep at the hands of the New York Knicks and Adam Aaronson of The Philly Voice reported that the team attempted several trades this year to boost the team's profile and playoff hopes.

The team really wanted Aaron Wiggins from Oklahoma City. They also eyed Tari Eason of Houston and Saddiq Bey of the New Orleans Pelicans.

When deals for any of those three failed to materialize, the organization tried trading for "Naji Marshall of the Dallas Mavericks, Donte DiVincenzo of the Minnesota Timberwolves, Brandon Podziemski of the Golden State Warriors and Ryan Dunn of the Phoenix Suns. None of those players were moved," Aaronson noted.

Morey publicly acknowledged the lack of depth on the team, telling reporters they had to "squint a little" to see the quality coming off the bench. It was a comment that both acknowledged the need to acquire another quality player or two and indirectly knocked the job he did in his role as constructor of the roster.

His inability to demonstrably improve the team at the deadline, coupled with the deals he gave Joel Embiid and Paul George, and the team's inability to get back to the NBA Finals for the first time since the Allen Iverson-led team in 2001, ultimately proved to be Morey's undoing.
