LSU's Lane Kiffin Apologizes for Comments on Why Ole Miss Loses Top Recruits

Adam WellsMay 12, 2026

LSU head coach Lane Kiffin has apologized for his comments about some of the structural issues that caused problems with recruiting during his tenure at Mississippi.

In a statement to Wilson Alexander of On3.com, Kiffin issued an apology for his comments and praised his former employer for being "wonderful to me and my family."

The situation stemmed from an interview with Vanity Fair's Chris Smith in which Kiffin, without citing anyone specific, mentioned that recruiting for Mississippi was difficult because players were being told by their families not to play in Oxford, Mississippi.

"That doesn't come up when you say Baton Rouge, Louisiana," Kiffin told Smith. "Parents were sitting here this weekend saying the campus' diversity feels so great: 'It feels like there's no segregation. And we want that for our kid because that's the real world.'"

Smith wrote that Mississippi's history and the program's "struggle to distance itself from symbols like the Confederate flag, Colonel Rebel and the nickname 'Ole Miss'" were indirectly invoked by Kiffin in their discussion.

Many of those old symbols have been brought up in the past by Rebels coaches as potential issues in recruiting talent. Former athletic director Pete Boone and head coach Tommy Tuberville were talking about the presence of the Confederate flag as a detriment back in 1997.

The university removed the Mississippi state flag, which features the Confederate battle flag in the design, from campus in December 2023 after the student senate voted in favor of removing it.

Kiffin spent six seasons as Mississippi's head coach from 2020 to '25. He left the program in November to sign a seven-year, $91 million contract with LSU.

The 51-year-old Kiffin was one of the most successful coaches in Mississippi history. He went 55-19 with four 10-win seasons and led them to the College Football Playoff last season, though he didn't coach those games after joining the Tigers.

Pete Golding, who had been on Kiffin's staff since 2023, was hired as his replacement and led the program to wins over Tulane and Georgia in the playoff before losing to Miami in the semifinals.
