Golden Tempo captured the attention and hearts of the nation when the colt raced from the very back of the Kentucky Derby field, through the middle of the pack, to the right, and all the way to the front of the pack to win the 152nd Run for the Roses.
Unfortunately, he will not achieve the elusive Triple Crown championship with historic trainer Cherie DeVaux stating in a press release, "Golden gave us the race of a lifetime in the Kentucky Derby, and we believe the best decision for him moving forward is to give him a little more time to recover after such a tremendous effort."
The release continued, "His health, happiness, and long-term future will always remain our top priority."
This marks the second consecutive year in which the Kentucky Derby winner sat out the Preakness. Last year, Sovereignty did not run in the second race of the Triple Crown, with trainer Bill Mott opting to hold his colt out of the event. The horse responded by winning the Belmont Stakes.
The same feat could await Golden Tempo, if DeVaux and Co. determine he is well rested and ready to run the third event of the series.
His absence opens the door for a new winner, such as Taj Mahal, who enters the race undefeated, or Chip Honcho, raced by Derby-winning jockey Jose Ortiz.
