Podziemski's extension comes at something of a pivotal moment for the Warriors. There were rumblings about head coach Steve Kerr's future in the wake of their season-ending loss to the Phoenix Suns in the play-in tournament.
Kerr ultimately decided to return for a 13th season, agreeing to a two-year contract on May 9.
Beyond the brief period when there were questions about who would be coaching Golden State in 2026-27, the roster was also in a state of flux. Jimmy Butler seems likely to miss at least a portion of the season after tearing his ACL in January and undergoing surgery on Feb. 9.
Draymond Green turned down his $27.7 million player option to give the team flexibility if LeBron James wanted to sign with the Warriors. Once James joined the Philadelphia 76ers, Green signed a one-year deal to return to Golden State for the exact $27.7 million salary he previously turned down.
Kristaps Porziลฤฃis did return to the Warriors on a two-year, $40 million deal. Stephen Curry is the only sure thing for the Warriors going into next season, but even he's coming off season in which he missed 39 games due to injuries.
The Warriors still had Podziemski under contract next season in the final year of his rookie deal, but signing him to an extension now gives them some future security as he continues to ascend.
A first-round pick in the 2023 NBA draft, Podziemski has established himself as an essential piece of Golden State's rotation over the past three seasons. The 23-year-old was one of 18 players who appeared in all 82 games during the 2025-26 campaign.
Podziemski finished fourth on the Warriors in scoring average with 13.8 points per game. He shot 37.1 percent from three on 5.0 attempts per game.
There aren't a lot of long-term building blocks in Golden State right now. Podziemski is still working his way up to that level, but he has shown enough as more has been put on his plate to suggest the Warriors can rely on him as a quality role player going forward.
