Warriors' Jimmy Butler Undergoes Surgery on Torn ACL, Latest Timeline and Updates on Knee Injury

Scott PolacekFeb 9, 2026

The Golden State Warriors announced Jimmy Butler underwent successful surgery Monday for the torn ACL he suffered during a Jan. 19 game against the Miami Heat.

The announcement explained he "will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2025-26 season and will begin rehabilitation immediately. He is expected to make a full recovery and an update on his progress will be provided early next season."

Golden State acquired Butler from the Heat via trade last season, and he ended up appearing in 30 regular-season and 11 postseason games for the team.

The 2025-26 campaign was set to be a full one with Butler and Stephen Curry teaming up and competing in the Western Conference, but this injury cut those efforts short. Butler ended up appearing in 38 games and averaged 20.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 1.4 steals while shooting 51.9 percent from the field and 37.6 percent from deep.

With the 36-year-old sidelined, the Warriors don't have another reliable scorer outside of Curry.

In fact, Butler is second on the team in points per game this season, while Jonathan Kuminga is third. And Kuminga just so happens to be on the Atlanta Hawks after the Warriors traded him.

Making matters worse is Curry's absence, as the future Hall of Famer hasn't appeared in a game since Jan. 30 thanks to a knee injury. The Warriors are 3-6 in the last nine games, and their immediate outlook isn't much better with Curry and Butler both sidelined.

In an ideal world, Curry can return and quickly establish chemistry with Kristaps Porziņģis after Golden State landed the big man in the Kuminga trade. Perhaps that will give it a chance to compete in the play-in tournament, assuming that is where it ends up by season's end.

The Warriors are in eighth place in the Western Conference and 3.5 games behind the sixth-seeded Minnesota Timberwolves in the race to avoid that play-in tournament.

Butler could have changed the team's overall outlook, but Warriors fans will have to wait until next season to see him take the court again alongside Curry.
