Carlos Correa Injury Update, Latest on Astros Star's Status in New MLB Rumors

Adam WellsMay 6, 2026

The Houston Astros are bracing for Carlos Correa to miss an extended period of time due to an ankle injury.

Per The Athletic's Chandler Rome, Correa is believed to have suffered a "serious" injury to his left ankle that occurred while he was taking batting practice prior to the Astros' game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday.

Rome added that Correa will meet with a foot specialist on Wednesday to get an exact diagnosis and potential recovery timeline.

Per MLB.com's Brian McTaggart, Correa could be out "for weeks — or maybe even months" as a result of the injury.

Details about how the injury occurred beyond it happening during batting practice are not currently available.

Correa was set to leadoff and play shortstop for the Astros in the original lineup posted by manager Joe Espada. Nick Allen filled in at shortstop in the revised lineup.

One potential silver lining to the situation is it's not to Correa's right ankle, which was the source of much discussion during his free agency after the 2022 season.

In December 2022, the San Francisco Giants had a 13-year, $350 million agreement in place with Correa that fell apart when the club failed him on a physical due to concerns with his right ankle stemming from an arthroscopic procedure to repair a fractured fibula when he was playing in the minors in 2014.

The New York Mets stepped in with a plan to give Correa a 12-year, $315 million contract, but they also backed out of the agreement due to concerns about the same ankle.

Correa ultimately signed a six-year, $200 million contract with the Minnesota Twins in January 2023. He spent two full seasons with the club before being traded to the Astros in July 2025.

The Astros originally drafted Correa with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 MLB draft. He spent his first seven big-league seasons in Houston, helping the team win a World Series title in 2017.

In 32 games this season, Correa is hitting .279/.369/.418 with three homers. He ranks third on the Astros with 1.2 fWAR, behind Yordan Alvarez and Christian Walker.

Houston has already been decimated by injuries this season prior to the Correa news. Jeremy Peña, Yainer Diaz, Joey Loperfido, Hunter Brown, Tatsuya Imai and Cristian Javier are all on the injured list.

The Astros (15-22) enter play on Wednesday with the second-worst record in the American League.
