Will Golden Tempo Race in the Preakness?
3 of 3
One of the great come-from-behind victories in all of sports took place at Churchill Downs Saturday when Golden Tempo emerged from the very back of the field, shot up the middle, and rode the right side of the track to the front and the win.
It was a picture-perfect example of patience, resiliency, late-race speed, a jockey (Jose Ortiz) who knew how to command his horse, and a trainer in Cherie DeVaux who prepared the horse to win in those situations.
Despite the classic victory, there are still questions about whether the 152nd Kentucky Derby winner will compete in Baltimore.
DeVaux said after Saturday's victory, "We'll assess how he's doing. As long as he's in tip-top shape, we'll talk about (the Preakness), and it is on the table. But it's really up to (the horse)."
She continued Sunday, adding, "Obviously, this race is in two weeks. It's a lot different than what he's done. He's a horse who has a lot of constitution to him. He can handle something like that. But if one day he just doesn't look like he's in tiptop shape, then we'll pivot and come up with another plan."
For now, the Derby winner's status for the May 16 race is up in the air, meaning it is entirely likely we enter the Preakness with no shot at a Triple Crown winner, forcing the horse racing world to find a new story to tell.
Prediction: Golden Tempo does not race
